Definitely take him/her to the vet and ask for a heart-worm test... (quick test that can be done in-house at most vet clinics) if that is negative, make sure to have a full blood work up done as well as fecal exams... a full blood work up is the only way to rule out the more serious illnesses...

If it's a larger dog you have to consider gastric torsion or bloat, but if he's active and healthy other than the weight loss, then this a less likely possibility.

There are many reasons for this to be happening... some of them can be life-threatening if vet attention isn't sought right away. Yes, worms, intestinal parasites (the kind you won't see in the daily poo's), heart-worm, thyroid issues... all of these are possibilities, but keep in mind they are treatable possibilities...

Also the way more serious issues that can't be ruled out without a vet visit... cancer, heart disease (congestive heart failure-early onset symptom), kidney issues, etc.

Obviously, everyone is saying the same thing... I'd be worried about it being one of the more common, lesser serious issues, but please by all means take the animal to the vet!

Bring your dog to the vet. Sometimes diabetes causes weight loss even though the dog will eat and drink and be active. It could be something more serious. The vet can tell you with an inexpensive blood test. Who knows, maybe your dog is fine but might have had a stomach issue you weren't aware of. See a vet.

Is she hungry all of the time? A tapeworm can cause dogs to lose weight even when eating a lot. I highly recommend a vet visit.

Is it possible your dog has worms? It sounds like he or she may have a gastrointestinal parasite. The only way to find out for sure is to have a fecal sample tested at the vet's office. They are usually easy to treat, and not too expensive. See your vet. Good luck!

I would take him to the vet. My dog was loosing weight too and it turned out that he has an Addisions disease and has to be on hormons for the rest of his life.
Its better if you find out right away what is going on.
Good luck

In the morning when he goes #2 check for worms.
Even if you don't see any.. You might call your vet and ask for advice. There are other types of worms you can't see in their #2.

Have you had him/her checked by a vet to see why this is happening? It could be a thyroid issue in an older dog, or worms among other things.

Have you taken him or her to the vet? Often weight loss is a symptom of something more serious. Also are you feeding him or her the appropriate amount and age level (i.e. puppy instead of adult) of food?
