I have chronic back pain and my GP doesn't know why, although I have been diagnosed with MS. I take morphine for the pain but the morphine is making me itchy, sick and tired, don't know if that's side effects or not, been on it two years, take 100mg+ per day. I also have started to feel severely depressed, is this the morphine, the back pain or me? Depressed to the point where I can't get out of bed and face the day, I have spent the last few weeks mainly sleeping and exhausted but also feeling very tired and ill, how can I start motivating myself to get up and face the day and is it the morphine that is causing this terrible crushing depression? I have never felt this bad inside before and fear that I can't hold it together much longer.

First... if you are having suicidal thoughts of any kind seek the assistance of a mental health specialist. After that ask your GP to refer you to a Pain Management Specialist and a Neuromuscular Specialist. There is always a reason for pain. Treating pain without understanding the cause is malpractice. Secondly if you are having side effects to MSO4 there are other medications for chronic severe pain as effective as Morphine which might not cause you the side effects. Also one the source of your pain is determined, it can often be better managed with non narcotic pain meds. As you have been on high doses of opiates for an extended period your pain will not be controlled well without proper management. Otherwise you will just have to continue increasing the opiate level due to satiation of the opiate receptors.

You must help yourself... be aggressive in seeking assistance with you health issues.

I am a Family Practitioner and Pain Management Specialist who has had a chronic pain condition for the past decade. I also have a neuromuscular condition very similar to MS so I understand where you are coming from. I finally got all my issues diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. After being on pain med for 9 years I have been able to withdraw from them and the pain is managed with non narcotic meds. I also use biofeedback which if you are properly trained in can help control the discomfort. While my neuromuscular condition is not in remissionit is controlled and the progression has slowed tremendously.

Seek the assistance of the best specialist you can find. And don't lose hope. Suicide doesn't help anything and causes grief for your family and friends.

If you have been diagnosed with MS which does cause cronic pain, morphine is the wrond medication.Their are specific medications for MS and pain. The reason you are feeling as bad as you are is the morphine, as high of a dose you are taking if you stay on that much longer you won't have to worry about suicide that is going to cause your liver and kindeys to shut down..
First thing to do get into see a nueroligist and get rid of that quack pill pusher you are seeing. Also you will have to be weened off the morphine as quitting cold turkey has deadly consiquences.Explain to this doctor what has been going on with you. They may recomend you to see a psyc doctor as mood swings goes hand and hand with MS,That is why I can not believe any doctor would put you on morphine at all as it is a depressent for sure. The thing is get help you may even have to go into rehab to get off that stuff, which would not be a bad thing for you at this point as it would help you get motivated.Mean time while you are waitng for appoitnments check out MS web sites and try lowering your morphine. One less pill every other day for a week then one less every day for a week then ask for a lower dose as ms contin can not be cut in two.Wish you the best of luck if you need any support feel free to e-mail me thru answers.God Bless.

Well, my mom has chronic neck pain due to slipped disks and she is on a low dose of antidepressants to get her mood more stable so the pain while still affecting her isn't taking over her life. It really really helped her. I don't know about your specific condition and am not sure if meds would be recommended for someone with MS, but check it out.

It is about time you see another Md. Pain killers will not heal, or make your condition disappear. Get an , Jesus, I just forgot the term, but is this exam that checks the antire area, in you case, back. Takes like X-rays photos. I know what you must be felling, see my wife had disc, L1 L2 L3 S1 S3 herniated, plus the stupid nerve pinch in a way that"nothing could be done", except injected therapy, or nerve block, and drugs. Which accelerated her death--cortisone and oxycontin. She was a woman with balls, she wistood the pain, some times, due to the pain and felling useless, she said it was better off to die, but immediately, said "forgive Lord this is a wrong thought, I want to heal and live" See she fought to the end. What you feel, suicidal, is because of the pain, and felling useless. FIGHT BOY FIGHT.

It's a combination of all three. Contact your GP and ask to see a psychologist, specialising in cognitive behavioral therapy. I was in the same position as you, and the therapist literally saved my life. Don't give up, friend, there is light at the end of the tunnel, believe me! The old army motto was never truer "adapt, improvise, and overcome!!" I wish you all the best, you have taken the first, and hardest step of all, in realising that you DO need help. That help is only a phone call away. You WILL win!!

I´ll pray for you. I think that you should get some help, I mean, besides doctors, family and friends, there will always be someone.

Sometimes, to me, works a lot religious stuff. God has always been my helper and when I´m down, no matter how bad i feel, he´s always there.

Sometimes i just cry when i pray, sometimes i just ask him for help and peace, and he always listen.

Take care and i hope this day becomes the day when you find motivation and joy.

:)

The hospital below will investigate your symptoms expertly-
you may have another illness that they might treat properly-
ms and many of those other symptoms can be the result of various infections or other conditions not well known in some medical quarters-your own doctor could refer you , or you can yourself- it may be well worth it,even if you have to pay.
