Walking is faster. The Museum of Modern Art is on 53rd Street between 5th and 6th.
Grand Central (the closest big entrance) is on 45th and Vanderbilt Avenue - which is just east of Madison Avenue.
Since there are no shuttle (crosstown) subways in the area, walking is fastest. (Because of the ways the streets are configured you have to zig zag a little.)
You just need to walk east two blocks (to Madison Avenue) then eight blocks south to 45th Street, then 1/2 block east to Vanderbilt. Voila!
And if you get lost - just ask someone. New Yorkers are very helpful and friendly - despite what some people say.
Have fun! From a born and raised New York City girl!

I agree, the subway is not the way to go. It;s a waste of money and time. To be honest, after a day at MOMA if there are at least 2 of you and you and you have done the museum, you might as well grab a cab, it won't be that much more. If you know in advance the day you are going you might want to try and get reservations at the real restaurant at MOMA, it is an excellent restaurant, but, not that cheap. they also have a cheaper small restaurant that I ate at that was supurb bt you still need reservations.

I agree that walking would be faster but if you really didn't want to walk it and wanted to take the subway just get on a downtown V train at 53rd and 5th Avenue take it to Bryant Park and get on a Flushing bound 7 train one stop to Grand Central.

By time you get to the platform and wait for the subway and then wait and take the crosstown shuttle train, you could have walked to Grand Central Station.
