Most likely if pine has been coated wash the whole wall with murphys oil and a sponge that has the scrubby part on it.

Well, first you need to dust it. Then sand lightly, with the grain of the wood. This is to make the wall have the same porosity all over, so that if you treat the wall, the treatment will penetrate. Understand that whatever you use, you might see a slight difference from where the pictures were hanging.

If you want to leave it look natural, just use treatments like danish oil, tung oil,or just plain lemon oil. If you use a varnish, it is more precarious to put on a whole wall and it will turn yellow in time.

Now, if the picture areas don't darken enough after you test with the oil you choose, try to pick a light ,oil base semi-transparent stain, so you will only have to do those areas. Then you can go over the stain with the oil.

Hope this helps and isn't too confusing. E-mail me if you care to.

I would sand the entire wall. Then I would treat the wood with a stain or laquor. That should take care of the lighter spots on the wall and make it pretty much uniform.

sounds beautiful. i love the old knotty pine. try sanding the wall. do it bt hand though. don't use a palm sander as that may cause dips in the wood. after sanding go over it with stain and urethane or just the urethane.
