4 gauge can handle more power, or wattage than an 8 gauge.

8g can handle up to 75amps and 4g can handle up to 150amps.

Use this guide, based on the fuse size in your amp(s) (if multiple fuses, add together for total amperage of system) and the lenth of power wire you'll need from the battery to the amp, to determine what size you need;

There is no industry standard for the production of audio power cable, so some brands claiming to have 4g may actually be 6g with thick insulation so you think; 'hey, it's big enough to be 4g' and you buy it.

Also, go to a hardware store and buy 'welding cable' instead. It's thicker and more flexible than car audio power cable, plus it's cheaper.

Have Fun!
