Yes, charcoal can be messy, and takes more time, but the taste is the absolute best, IMHO.

Absolutely charcoal. No flavor with gas (except for the flavor of propane). Wood fire is even better.

Charcoal does add flavor that gas does not, although you can get some of that flavor into gas grills by smoking wood chips.

a good quality gas grill provides controllable and more even heat for longer than charcoal.

I agree 100 % but gas is so much faster and if you live in an Apartment gas is the way to go.

My favorite charcoal grilled meal was from Oakies in Surf City,NJ I purchased the sirloin beef(for Burgers) and grilled on charcoal grill.I still think about that burger...best ever.......

I prefer gas...no muss no fuss. We have had to use a charcoal grill at our apartment while we wait for our house to be done and it's a pain. It's takes forever to heat up and get right, the food cooks more slowly. Can't wait to get into the house and my gas grill again.

No you don't you can put the Briquet's in a pan and smoke them
