Honestly (and you can look it up), Bush and the GOP controlled Congress (2002-2006) cut veterans benefits almost every year since the start of Dubya's "Global War on Terror."

FULLY KNOWING that the survival rate of an injured soldier was much higher now than it was in previous wars.

Makes absolutely no sense to me.

I saw the article, too. However, I returned home from OIF in late 2005 and have received excellent care from the VA (long waits, but that is understandable). Some soldiers just aren't cut out to be over there - if I made a VA claim for every time my vehicle got blown up over there, I'd be a rich man. Maybe they should start profiling soldiers BEFORE we go fight, to make sure we can handle shooting people, getting shot at, and getting blown up. So the guy has some migraines - rub some dirt on it and drive on, soldier! The VA does an honorable, outstanding service to our vets. They should get their due.

Many things are wrong with the VA Medical system but most of iot boils down to the almighty dollar. Our government (Dems and Reps) are too busy spending money on stupid stuff. Take a look around a VA hospital, almost every doctor is a Foreigner. This is there way of saving money by hiring foreign doctors and pay them half of what a U.S. Doctor makes. Another example: a Doctor in the military retires from service but whats to continue practicing. He takes his 20-30 yrs of experience to the VA. They cut his pay, and make him surrender a big percentage of his military pension. So why would any doctor want to go anywhere near the VA. It also causes the VA to lack experienced people.
This also applies to nuses techs and many other jobs. This is just one of the examples of how our government taking advantage of the people who serve(d) our country. Erosion of military and veteran benefits to save a few bucks!! SAD!!!!

I am an old Vietnam Marine and have depended on the VA for medical care for several years after becoming disabled. My personal experience has been I get better care at the VA than at private medical clinics.

However, I can't disagree with any of these replies to this question.

We haven't been involved in a major, long-term combat engagement since Viet Nam... It would make no sense to keep staff and facilities when the costs to operate them were astronomical... Now that the war's going on, the problem is growing worse... and they're now getting the funding they need to take care of it.

I work for the government... this is how things work. You don't get money to "stay prepared and staffed" in the event something important happens... It has to break first... THEN you get 20% of what you need.

One problem is a law dating back to the Carter administration. It's called the "double dipping" law. Any military officer who retires (doctor, dentist, nurse, administrator) and wants to work for the VA has to surrender up to 55% of his military pension to do so. Ergo, you have a lot of folks working on those vets who are not blessed with the "been there, done that" empathy that the job demands.

It's called them being under funded for 8 years of the Clinton administration.

From 1992 to 2000, the VA budget only increased from 36 billion to 47 billion over 8 years.

Bush has increased VA funding from 47 billion to 88 billion so far, twice the rate of increase under clinton.

Tough problem. Most of the severe scars from wounding come from the sense of helplessness of the soldiers. They have feelings and these feelings have to be expressed in spite of their body torture. Most people are not prepared to deal with that! Even the professionals seem distant to many of the wounded. And without good communication, it is very hard to get good care.
