To think that humans are favored or more important/special to a supreme being than any other animal is just silliness and arrogance at an extreme level.

Great question! For some people its actually upsetting that we could be here by chance for various reasons. One of them could be that if we believed a higher being created us then we could explain the unexplainable by using the higher being - this happened to the Greeks and why they created myths if i remember correctly, if we were here by chance certain things may be quite hard to explain. Believing that a higher being exists also gives some people hope in various situations and have something to pray to and have hope that the higher entity will save you ect. However if we were here by chance some people might not have any hope in such circumstances knowing that nothing would be able to save them. Being here by chance would also have many people have no comfort for the death of a loved one because if you were here by chance presumably you wouldn't believe in an afterlife which can to some people be a comfort when grieving about the loss of a loved one. There are probably other reasons however, i am unable to come across any more major ones at present. (Sorry!) Now, i don't want to offend anyone but I think we invented both religion and the higher being(s) that it involves for the same reasons that i mentioned above, we feed off religions hope, comfort, and answers it gives us. (Sorry if anyone found that offensive i don't mean to offend anyone these are just my beliefs.) As to the importance question I don't believe i have heard anything like it to either prove or disprove it. So heres my reaction, I think some people may like to think that humanity is superior or important that a higher being took the effort to create us though that is not my train of thought im sure people out there do believe that. Well Hope this helped and sorry if it offended or confused as that was not my intention. Good question and have a great day!

No, but I do feel "very much loved" that a higher power would want to create us. What is scary to me is those who have not read the back of the Book and have no idea what is going to happen to them if they don't believe that God created them.
But you are right about religion....they are for the most part, invented...I'm not religious, I belong to the family of God..that is the only church I know is for real...some of them come closer to the truth than others however..I will go to those once in a while, those that are spirit filled..and probably even more as I see the day approaching..

We were made with the instinct to worship something. If we were here by mere chance, we would have figured out a way to extend our lives and cure many of the diseases by now. We can go to the moon but when it comes to life, we have been programmed to die or live to maybe 120. No matter what we do. That is because God is in control.

Can you tell me the probability that a shelf full of random junk will topple over and the ensuing mess will accidentally come together into the form a sentient robot that is capable of thinking, reasoning, feeling, and believing in some higher power?

Death scares people, as does the thought of being wronged without punishment for the person who wronged them. This has been the case ever since man evolved, and blamed magic for everything good and bad.

Even science supports that there is a higher power. The law of concervation of mass states that "matter is neither created nor destroyed." That means that we didn't just pop up in masses and that we are never destroyed. Our energies/spirits continue even when our bodies die.

I agree. The truth is that there is nothing special about humans (or our particular planet, solar system, galaxy, etc).
To Jamesmom2,
That ability is adaptive. It helps us think through situations we encounter. It is explained perfectly well (and more simply) by evolution.

I'm OK with being insignificant to the vast cosmos. I don't know why the majority of the human race are (and have been) such egomaniacs that they think they should be the center of attention.
Funny how religious people who claim to have humility are the ones who think 'god' should answer to their every whim.

Yes that is one of the reasons religions evolve.
