I joined the Navy right after I turned 17 and was a high school drop out.
That was the best decision I ever made in my life as I did get my GED in the service, I got to travel and see some amazing places in the world that I do not think I would have the time to see now.
The Navy taught me to follow orders and make decisions.
I think everyone should go into the service for at least 4 years as not only do you mature but you can get an amazing education.
I was in for a 3 year enlistment and the training I did receive helped me start my own company and having made literately millions of dollars and having a blast doing what I love to do was the best part.
The education I learned I took with me and I got paid to learn and travel
If the government had any brains (yeah right) they would allow the folks trying to sneak into this country to join the military for 6 years.
Reasons being
1- They would be forced to learn to speak English and not put a burden on the school system
2- Upon honorable discharge they are eligible for the GI bill to further their education
3- They become automatic citizens and are not a burden to society as now they have marketable skills
If I had to do it again I would join in a heart beat and possibly stay in for another 4 years just so I could get to see the part of the world I missed.

I became, and I say became instead of joining because you don't join the marines you become one, a U.S. Marine for many reasons. Primarily because of the pride and the brotherhood that the Marines are. Also the Marines offer the greatest challenge. We are the smallest branch with the hardest and especially the longest training there is. If you're thinking of joining the military however, enter the branch that is your BEST fit, and for reasons that are your own and not others feelings and opinions.

I may have lost my girlfriend who I was going to marry , but yeah I joined the Navy , and I am a Seal candidate. It's hard but anything worth having deserves some and if not all sacrifice. Honestly the Navy is the best branch. In conventional Navy you are guaranteed four hot meals a day and a warm bed. You will most of the time be out of harms way, unlike SEAL's , Army and Marines who are mostly combatants. In the Navy there isbetter job and education benefits.

Well I did not join a branch but husband did right out of high school 6yrs ago and he joined the Marines, he chose the marines because he thought it would be fun and he had an Uncle in the Air Force, and the air force did not give him the time of day so he chose marines but after being a marine he would never join a diffrent branch.

I joined the United States Air Force, in 1975. I chose the Air Force, because at the time, I figured it was best suited for me. The jobs you could get in the USAF, were high tech (even for the 70's), and I was looking for something like that. I have no regrets about my hitch in the Air Force, and I believe I am a better man because of it, today. I have the upmost respect for any member of the Armed Forces, and any branch in which they serve. In today's world, being a solder, airman, sailor or marine takes bravery and loyalty. I can't speak for the rest of the nation, but as for myself, I am gratefull. Peace!

I joined the Navy because I am facinated by ships and the sea. There are places and things you get to see that other branches can't offer. Not too many AF or Army guys get to have swim call in the middle of the Indian Ocean or see whales and dolphins jumping all around the ship. My ships took me to places rarely ever seen by any other branch of service. Some examples: Fiji, Samoa, Kodiak(fishing heaven), Adak, Vancouver BC, all the Hawiian Is, Midway, IS (snorkeling heaven),Mombasa and Nairobi(included a 3 day African safari), Seychell Is, just to name a few

I joined the Navy because of a deep maritime history in my family. My father was a merchant seaman for over 50 years. My grandfather led the rag-tag Norwegian fleet against the Swedes in the Battle of Stavangerfjord. An event which led to Norway being granted independence from Sweden in 1905.
I never regretted that decision and never wanted to be in another branch, even though I did serve eight of my 25 years with Fleet Marine Forces. Throughout the years I have been comforted in my decision from something that William Lederer wrote in one of his books: "There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who have been to sea and those who haven't".

It was during 1968 when I decided on the USAF, but when my police records revealed I had 2 assault & battery arrests for getting in fights the Air Force dumped me. A few days later I got a phone call from a USMC Gunny who said he heard about me from the USAF Flt. Sgt. during lunch. The Gunny told me I was "exactly what the Marines wanted".
So, I went ahead and checked out the Marines and a pal who was home one leave from Marine boot camp told me the Army, at that time didn't care if you learned what you needed to know to have the best chance to survive. But, the Marines would beat what you needed to know in to each and every recruit.
So, I picked some rough treatment to have the best survival odds.

I joined the Army because it appealed to me the most, perhaps because people I looked up to fought in WWII in the Army. I never regretted it while I was there, but
knowing what I know today, I would choose the Air force.
