You can make what is called onion rice with brown rice. This is quick and easy. The recipe usually calls for 1 cup of rice(well rinced), a small can of beef broth, a block of butter or margarine, a small can onion soup.
Combine uncooked brown rice with the other ingredients and season to taste. Cook on the stove top for the amount of time recommended for the rice.
Brown rice can take three times longer to cook than the bleached white variety.

The only thing about it is the length of time it takes to cook, I am a former chef and part-time vegetarian, I find a rice cooker is the best way, plus it can be flavoured like white rice.
With vegetables, mushrooms, and spices, I generally cook them a bit but it is not nessessary, you can add them raw, Ilike onions, mushrooms, peppers and spices like oregano and a dash of saffron or tumeric.
Salt is a factor as brown rice takes so much longer to cook so be careful, it can get overwelmed quickly, I would add it at the end with your fat like butter or margarine.
Have you ever tried brown basmati rice, it cooks quicker and has the nutty taste of regular basmati, soaking the rice to does make it cook fast, like beans the outer husk softens a bit.

I always add boullion or part stock and water. I never tried your method of sauteeing things before you cook it. I have added peas, carrots, etc. during cooking. So, now I have a new way to cook brown rice. I like the other tips also. Thanks everybody for answering.
