I would suggest the Northshore. Its has some really nice towns right across the bridge and then moves on into a more lush beautiful country setting.
Come to l'autre cote du lac, the "other side of the lake," and revel in the romance and history of resort towns Abita Springs and Mandeville, established when steam-powered boats and trains brought the fashionable and elite 24 miles across Lake Pontchartrain. Since the creation of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the world's longest bridge, accessing the Northshore is a snap.
Explore the towns of Slidell, Covington and Madisonville that grew up to support the growing city of New Orleans. And find your way to the hamlets that inhabit the countryside here: Bush, Folsom and Lacombe, known variously for their off-the-beaten-path rusticity, equestrian traditions and Native-American heritage. You'll find a softer side to Greater New Orleans on the Northshore, where St. Tammany Parish is the natural choice for families, outdoors enthusiasts, gourmands, golfers and arts-lovers.
Dining is an art form in St. Tammany Parish, with dining rooms ensconced in old plantation homes, and venues offering authentic Creole and Cajun specialties.
You'll find ample fairs, festivals and special events, including family-friendly Mardi Gras celebrations, and nearby New Orleans hosts the world-renowned Jazz Fest.
Check out our Stay on the Northshore section to find great accommodations, including affordable hotels and motels, quaint bed and breakfasts and inns nestled in the pine forests off the beaten path. Campgrounds offer up their own natural attractions in the form of native flora and fauna.
Use this site as your own personal travel guide to plan your next vacation or getaway, and find exceptional places - and warm hospitality - around every moss-draped corner.
