I know exactly how guilty you feel. the same thing happened to me. My dog had a retained testical all his life. I know I should have had him castrated but never did. Then last year he was diagnoised with testical cancer. His retained testical was as big as a chickens egg (he was a Cocker Spaniel). It had grown that much in just 2 months from his last check up. He was 13 at the time, he'd got a heart murmur, pancrinitus and also he was diabetic. My vet said that because of him being diabetic the surgery was extra risky. He had a 40/60 chance.
He said concidering his age and health problems, if it had been anyone else he would have said leave it, but he knew how much I cared for my dog, and how much work I'd put in over the past couple of years so he said it was worth the risk. I decided to go ahead and have it done. He pulled through it fine. I saidly lost him last month, his diabetese beat us after 3 long hard years. He would have been 15yrs last Saturday.
I'm glad I had it done and know if I hadn't had it done, I wouldn't have had the last 12 months with him. I would have only had him a matter off months maybe weeks if I hadn't.
Even though you are very worried you know you are doing the right thing and don't beat yourself up about not getting her done earlier. You can't live on "If onlys". By having her speyed now you greatly reduce the risk of her developing cancer later on. Even though there is always a risk with every animal that has surgery, I'm sure she'll be fine and when she's had it done you can spoil her even more than I'm sure you do now.
All the best with the op. XX

First, I'm sorry you received this news. Second, the success depends on a few things. Certain kinds of cancer will pop up again. If for some reason your vet doesn't or isn't able to remove the entire thing, then the cancer is still there. That said, as far as cancers on the outside of the body(by which I mean not internal organs or bone), I have seen great success with the vet I work for removing the tumors and all being well. The same while I was in college and going through my surgical rotations.

The success rate of the surgery depends on how involved the tumor is once the vet is in to see exactly what is going on and also what type of tumor it is.
I am sorry your dog has to go through this......You and your dog are going through one of the BIG reasons a dog should be spayed BEFORE their first heat....Spay surgery is not a big deal..going through what your dog is going through is a VERY BIG deal..one that could have been completely avoided.
I hope people who come here and read this and people that you know will learn from your experience and will get their dogs spayed.
