Blasphemey is speaking irrevrently of God, a divine thing, or sacred things. It's being grossly insulting to God. To highlight the seriousness of having done this, in Mark 3:29 , Jesus said : " But he that shall Blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgivness, but is in danger of eternal damnation." And in Matthew 12: 31 & 32, Jesus said:
" Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemey shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemey against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. VS. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall never be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." Both these scriptures are made in reference to someone who had attributed some work of the Holy Ghost(Spirit) to the Devil. In other words, if you see some miracle that is obviously the work of the Holy Spirit, and you say Satan did it, that is the unpardonable sin. It's possible to say a word against Jesus and be forgiven, if you truly are repentant.

Ps. 74:18; Isa. 52:5; Rom. 2:24; Rev. 13:1, 6; 16:9, 11, 21. It denotes also any kind of calumny, or evil-speaking, or abuse (1 Kings 21:10; Acts 13:45; 18:6, etc.). Our Lord was accused of blasphemy when he claimed to be the Son of God (Matt. 26:65; comp. Matt. 9:3; Mark 2:7). They who deny his Messiahship blaspheme Jesus (Luke 22:65; John 10:36). Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost (Matt. 12:31, 32; Mark 3:28, 29; Luke 12:10) is regarded by some as a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel, and hence is an unpardonable sin, simply because as long as a sinner remains in unbelief he voluntarily excludes himself from pardon. Others regard the expression as designating the sin of attributing to the power of Satan those miracles which Christ performed, or generally those works which are the result of the Spirit's agency.

People who commit blasphemy (that is unforgivable) generally know they are doing it and do not care.
It isn't something that can be done "by accident" so don't obsess over it. Different denominations within Christianity have their own interpretations of what "blasphemy" is.
Pursuing the correct interpretation can be a great study...but don't do it out of fear that you will (or might have) committed this elusive unforgivable sin. It will only cause you worry and stress.

Blasphemy is a sin that can be forgiven the only unforgivable sin is blasphemy fo the Holy Spirit which is to deny all truth.
The truth of God is revealed through the Holy Spirit and to deny or blaspheme the Holy spirit is to reject God's truth.

I think that blasphemy is using the Lords name in vain type of thing. I was taught that there is only one thing that you can do to not get into heaven if you've been saved. That would be turning your back on God because it says in the Bible that God is a gentle God and he won't force his way into your life. So, if you turn your back on Him, he cant forgive you.
I hope that made sense. As long as you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will go to Heaven.

The Holy Spirit is God's active principle in the world, as the Son (Word, Logos) is the Father's command and direction. By "active principle" we mean that the Holy Spirit is the personified effect of God in the lives of people and in the world. By "blaspheming" the Holy Spirit, Jesus therefore refers to one who denies the divine authority and activity of the Spirit -- as did those who attributed the exorcisms of the story to Beelzebul.

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is ignoring the Holy Spirit when it draws you to God. In essence, you are denying it.
It is NOT a verbal denying of the Holy Spirit as Brian Sapient, the moronic theologian of Rational Response Squad claims.
So, if you do not accept Christ as your personal savior, that is blasphemy and the unforgivable sin.

Mr A's answer is exactly the reason why christianity is all about hatred and intolerance. if you don't believe as they do, you are evil and going to hell. NICE, very christlike of you.
my understanding has always been that blasphemy is taking god's name in vein or, using it in a disrespectful way.
