Well the transistor made it all possible. That one device, made a revolutionary change in how we do things. Before transistors there were vacuum tubes. They were big, bulky and consumed a lot of power. Just a calculator with less power than todays simple handheld ones could take up more space than several industry size buildings. The transistor is the building block of an IC, and an IC is the heart of any microprocessor. There are millions of transistors found in many of todays processors. The ability to make transistors smaller yields faster and more complex processors. This also unfortunately yields a larger power density and thus requires more heat dissipation, but that is another topic.
