Well from and hour to half and hour eat some carbohydrates to give your body a boost of energy pre-workout. I usually consume a bagel or some yogurt before a workout. Immediately after a workout you want to give you body some quick protein and carbohydrates because that's when they are most readily adsorbing nutrients. I usually take my whey protein shake along with half a bagel at that point.

My trainer at my gym has always told me to eat a small, light meal or snack about 30 minutes prior to working out. The small meal can be almost anything, but something with carbs, like pasta is good, but also eating a banana or powerbar (or Lunabar, Clifbar) are good for the protein and vitamins.
After your workout, your body will continue to burn calories for several hours, you can probably eat just about anything you would normally consume (a regular low cal, low fat meal).
Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.

Pasta. You can work out a half hour after you've eaten and it will keep you going. Used to eat a plain bowl of pasta with a little butter before doing aerobic class.
Of course, I'd eat some protein after I get home again.

if you have to eat, you should wait an hour before working out. but it's best to eat after your workout. thats when your body can absorb the vitamins and minerals best.

don't eat 2 hours before working out and 45 minutes after working out! Food will get in your appendix if you do. You could drink energy drinks or energy bars after workout.
