Ramstein is GREAT! I spent 3 years in Baumholder (about 30 km away) My family loved it as well. The BX/PX and Commissary in Ramstein is very good.

Germany was great. I loved the food and the culture. There are roughly 10 castles over 700 years old within an hour drive.

Go to Trier during the Christmas Fest. The Cathedral there has been there for about 1900 years and is very beautiful.

Another Good place is Idar-Oberstein. That is about an hour away from Ramstein. There is a walk platz through the center of town and the ice cream shop is very good. Look in wikipedia for idar oberstein and check out the pic of the church.

Try to learn a little German and use it on the economy. I found from personal experience the Germans readily accept you if you try to fit in.

It has been a while for me but my first assignment was Germany as well. Your husband will have to go and get command sponsored and then the family comes later. It took 4 months for my family to catch up. If command sponsorship is still required, be patient.

Good luck!

Ramstein's a nice, big base... probably the biggest Air Force Base in Europe, if not the most well-known. It's also located very close to the main US military hospital in Europe, Landstuhl Army Hospital--it's practically right down the road. There's also quite a few other little Army bases near Ramstein, in the Kaiserslautern area, so it's a thriving military community (Kaiserslautern, or "K-town" as some of the more lazy American residents call it, is the nearest large German city). It's located in southwest Germany in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate, in English), and is relatively close to the French border, as well as the Luxembourg border and Belgian border. The nearest large German cities, other than Kaiserslautern, include Saarbrucken, Trier, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Koblenz, and farther away, cities like Koln (Cologne) and Munchen (Munich). You're also relatively close to Strasbourg, in the French region of Alsace, as well as Metz; both are in France. The city of Luxembourg isn't too far away either, and you're only a few hours' drive away from Switzerland, for that matter. On a bigger scale, you're a few more hours away from Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam... and a bit farther, places like Berlin, Salzburg, and Prague.

All said and done, you'll be in a pretty good place going to Ramstein, and in an ideal corner of Germany. I myself lived about an hour-an-a-half away in Wiesbaden during my time in Germany, so I know that particular corner of the country relatively well. Enjoy your stay there; it'll go by a LOT quicker than you might be thinking right now!

I went to kindergarten at Ramstein... It was a great place. Be willing to see some of Europe while you're there, don't be like a lot of wives and sit on post 24/7..
