If you don't have a PS2 now, don't even bother with a PS3 - just get a PS2 and enjoy all the inexpensive games for it. That should keep you busy for at least a year, at which time you can re-evaluate the PS3 situation.
While there are lots of games scheduled to come out in the next few months, that's true of all of the next-gen consoles - and until a game comes out there's no way to tell if it'll be any good or not. Buying a PS3 or any console based on an unreleased game is just a bad gamble.

True there are not many games for PS3 that probably fit what you are looking for, but within the next 3-6 months you are going to be bombarded with games. Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear, Uncharted: Drake, Lair, Warhawk, Little Big Planet, The new online network Home, Ratchet and Clank, Final Fantasy XIII, the list goes on. The hottest game right now is prob. ninja gaiden sigma (great, but hard game), tekken arcade (great buy from the PS store), and resistance.
I recently sold my wii for a PS3 and couldnt be happier. Yes the wii was fun, but the games for it are just so lame. Other than zelda and wii sports there was nothing. I was debating on getting a 360 but the with blu-ray on the rise, wi-fi, bluetooth, and all the possible usb attatchments I was convinced to get a ps3. I love getting the latest in nice hardware.
So let me tell you after I bought the ps3 I was blown away. The interface as well as the system itself is so clean and crisp, i almost just want to sit and stare. The system runs really quick and is silent. Half the time the fan is on I cant even tell. Playing a PS3 at the store or at a buddies house is much different than actually owning one. I spent hours just toying with settings and learning how much the PS3 has to offer. And everytime there is an update the system gets exponentially better. But enough about the presentation and hardware, I feel that the PS2 is the greatest gaming system since nintendo and I would recommend you get one solely for the games but after expierencing the PS3 I would say save up and buy it. You wont regret it. The same developers who developed those PS2 games you love are right around the corner from creating even better ones for the PS3. Plus you can still play those old PS2 and 1 games with almost no load times and unlimited memory space on the PS3. If you were a fan of the PS2 than you will love the PS3.
Dont let those who have never owned a PS3 convince you other wise. The PS3 expierence is unlike any other, and when the games and Home Netowork start rolling in this winter it will be competing, if not winning, the console war. Never doubt Sony

I have a PS3, and I have to say that the PS3 is NOT overpriced. The PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player. If you were to buy just a standard Blu-Ray player it would cost around $800-900 dollars.
If there aren't any games out there right now for the PS3 that don't appeal to you I can't help you. The best games out right now to me is Motorstorm (off-road racing game) and Resistance Fall of Man (shooter) and I have them both. Sooner or later games for the PS2 will stop production, and you will almost have no choice but to buy a PS3 or be left behind in the gaming world. So I say that you buy the Playstation 3 and don't waste your money on the PS2 because you can play PS2 games on the PS3.
Final Fantasy XIII is coming out near the end of this year or early next year. Obilivion is the closest game to Final Fantasy that is already out for PS3.

The lack of titles is slowly becoming a "non-issue" because of all the schedule releases. Here's a couple of links that may help you in the "game selection" department:
PS3 EXCLUSIVE TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_exclusives
PS3 ALL TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3_games
The PS3 is only 9 months old. The 360 didn't have a great launch game lineup either when it first came out, so I wouldn't make my decision on whether to buy the PS3 based on the "current" game selection. There are 345 games scheduled to be released on the PS3 between now and March 2008.... this will once and for all end all this "Lack of games" talk.
Also, if you do some reseach you'll see that the 360's future game lineup is mediocre at best. Most of the buzz at the latest E3 revolved around the PS3's new titles and highly anticipated future releases.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!
