My recipe is rather easy. Take a long loaf of Italian or French bread, and cut lengthwise almost all the way through, so it looks rather like a butterfly.
Mix extra virgin olive oil, about 1/4 to 1/2 cup, (or substitute spreadable margerine or soft butter) with either fresh smashed garlic cloves or good quality garlic powder, 1-3 cloves of fresh garlic or 1/2 to 1-1/2 teaspoons garlic powder. I also add a few shakes of dried oregano, crushed between the hands (brings out the aroma!) and a bit of salt and pepper.
Using a pastry brush, barbeque brush or a clean new paintbrush, brush the mixture on the cut sides of the bread, place on a cookie sheet or broiler pan, and broil, cut side up for a few minutes until the edges begin to brown and crisp. If you used margerine or butter, you can of course use a butter knife or spatula.
You can serve as is now, or sprinkle some shredded parmesan, mozzarella or gorgonzola cheese and let it melt in.
Slice diagonally into pieces about 1 and 1/2 inches wide, and serve on a pretty napkin covered tray or basket. You can cover with another napkin to keep warm for a few minutes, but serve as soon as possible.
Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
3 bulbs garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 (1 pound) loaf Italian bread
1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Slice the tops off of the garlic bulbs so that the tip of each clove is exposed. Place the bulbs on a baking sheet, and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 30 minutes, or until garlic is soft.
Set the oven to broil. Slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally, and place cut side up on a baking sheet.
Squeeze the cloves of garlic from their skins into a medium bowl. Stir in the butter, parsley, and Parmesan cheese until well blended. Spread onto the cut sides of the bread.
Broil for about 5 minutes, until toasted.

I like to mix a 1/2 teaspoon of crushed garlic into a cup of butter, then spread it around on sour dough bread..or any bread..then top it off with parmasaen cheese which really gives it that extra kick..put under the broiler for a few minutes, watch it it only takes a couple of min...and you have a garlic bread people will love..you can also just throw it in the oven if you dont have a broiler

Easiest way--Slice italian bread in half, spread butter on both sides and then top with garlic salt or powder. Place in the oven at 350 degrees and take out when golden brown. For an extra treat add some mozzarella cheese and toast until the cheese melts-YUM!

Slice Italian or French Bread. Mix butter with garlic powder and a very little dried parsley. Butter each slice with the butter mixture and place in pan butter side down. Fry gently. If desired, do the same to the other side.

I agree with Bella, rubbing a garlic bulb directly onto the bread makes it so much better than just cutting the garlic up.
