Seriously. The "There are no atheists in foxholes" brigade always seem to assume that just before we die we'll desperately cling to the possibility that life might go on after death. Me, I'd just think, How will my children be about the death of their father? Will they be able to grow into the people I hoped without me looking after them as well?

So I ask you: you face certain death within seconds. What do you think?

a) Praise be! My immortal soul is at last entering the kingdom of heaven, I will meet my saviour and eternity will be perfect, nothing else matters;

or

b) That's it. My children, my family, my friends - how will they be about this?

Please think carefully, I'm interested. There may be a c). Thanks for all answers.

I am genuinely moved by many of these answers. It's going to be hard to pick a Best without implying that the others weren't almost as good (they were). Thank you to all who check in here.

I've had a person pull out a gun at me (working at a store) and I was so out of it, so nervous, I couldn't even open the register to give him money! I prayed and asked for forgiveness and for God to help me, and my friends and family to forgive me for all the wrong I have done.
I've had hyperventilation to a bad point and I thought I was dying, I did the same thing.
I've been in bad accidents, I did the same thing.

Depending on what kind of imminent deathwe're talking about here., I would be willing to bet that there would be a good amount of swearing going on in my head. Then there might be the "I don't wanna die!" thoughts. And yes, there would be many thoughts for my loved ones.

I don't know if it would be this carefully thought out (as you instructed), but I'd be worried about leaving my husband and family behind; I'd be scared of how bad will the pain be; and I'd be praying for God to forgive my sins and take me to Heaven. So I guess it's a), b), and c)...not necessarily in that order.

OK. I know you only asked theists, but I'm going to answer anyway. I am an atheist and have actually thought once that I was going to die soon (asthma attack). My thoughts were sadness for my wife and a feeling that I have lived a good life.

B.

I am a Christian, but I don't want to die. I enjoy this life and would like to prolong it as much as possible, and unless I was 104 and had lived a full life, I would not be happy to die. I would think of my family and friends and the world I was leaving in general.

I agree with b). I would worry about how they feel too. I think the feeling of being a spirit and not being able to communicate with your loved ones would leave me feeling I still had more to say. So why wait until you die, say it now and tell them how to cope with it.

B) Deist.

It all would depend though, on the circumstance, I can never really tell you what I will think come the moment.

I could just think: What BUS?
Or: Why did I ever think I would make that?
Or even: I can take it, that won't kill me.

Mine would be, I wonder what heaven is really like cause we all go there and I wonder if anyone will witness my resurrection and I would proceed accordingly into my next state giving thanks for my life and events to all of Creation Energy.

C: did i live a good life? do i have regrets? So what now?
While asking myself this, i'd be thinking of my family.

so really it's both a and b. they're not necessarily mutually exclusive
