Some insurance companies will charge more for red cars, younger people, sports cars, etc because statistically speaking they have more accidents and get more tickets.

People who choose red anything tend to be more impulsive and excitable, and thus not as safe on the road as others who are less impulsive. Red is a color that stands out, so police notice it more, and if the vehicle is speeding or doing other illegal or unsafe maneuvers, they will be pulled over. In police statistics red vehicles do get the most moving violations, so if you can stand a brown, gray or white car, you will calm down more on the road, and police will notice you less. Some insurance companies do factor in the car color, and others don't. You get the best rates if you are an under 25 year old male with a grade average of B+ or better.

No insurance company I have ever worked for cares what color your car is. It's waay to vague to calculate a formula. (i.e. what if your is a deep red or light red? If it's 2 toned do you only pay half extra?) Where do you draw the line?

What they do care about is how many accidents and tickets you have. If you have a noticable cars and that means you get more tickets, than maybe your insurance is more expensive. But it's a stretch.
I would love to see a link to these so called "studies" from the other answers.

Colors of cars and their effect on insurance rates are derived from studies done by insurance companies.

Red is a eye catching color, and will show up better to someone watching for speeders. Also people that get the cherry red sports car are 2-3 times more likely to have a wreck from high speed driving.

White is cheaper because it is less likely associated with speed, and since the color white in essence is reflecting more of the light spectrum than any other color then it keeps people aware of where the vehicle is. If you know where that White minivan is to your left then you are less likely to hit it. People tend to hit cars when they don't see them immediately.

Part of it is due to studies. Look at men in business suits. They have a tendency to wear red ties. It is even suggested to wear that color tie to job interviews. It's called a power tie and, supposedly suggests you are a "take charge guy". Studies also indicate that more red cars are involved in accidents (at fault). Could be that power thing again. Red paint costs more to repaint. Red paint has a higher content of gold in it than any other color. Price it.

Believe it or not, red vehicles get in more accidents than any other color (you'd think black cars would be harder to see at night, but for some reason the red cars get it the worst). It might have something to do with the fact that you can get virtually any sports/performance car you care to name in red. They call it "arrest-me-red" for a reason.

You cannot see red at night therefore accidents are highly likely to occur. Is why the insurance rate is higher.

Theory: Red cars get pulled over and ticketed more often. Thus, a red car driver must be and unsafe driver.

The color of the vehicle doesn't matter. My insurance agent has never seen my car and has never asked about it.
