main battle tank MBT featuring as class of armor dates back to the 50ies, when the old clasification to light, medium and heavy tanks was obsolete. from the 50ies of the 20th century the classes were re-designed and fused into the light tanks and main battle tanks.
among the new designs one of these would be first "pure" MBT russian T 54, American M48/60 or british Chieftain
note WWII clasification of armors was following: light, medium, heavy, recon /russian,american,german/ cruiser, infantry, light /british/
types light> stuart, Pz II
medium>Sherman family, Pz III, Pz IV, T 34
heavy> IS family, KV family, Pz VI

I guess you'd have to define what you meant by "Main Battle Tank". The very first tank? The first tank with a large howitzer/gun, versus just machine guns? The first tank with a turret? The first tank with enough range and speed to become a deep strike weapon?
Heck, Leonardo Da Vinci designed a prototype tank, but the first practical tanks didn't appear on a battlefield until World War I.
Check out the referenced article for more details.

British Mark 1 developed for trench warfare during WW1. It was produced in a "Male" battle tank and a "Female" version for trench war fare... I'm SERIOUS... this is true.
Da Vinci drew up plans for a tank but some academics tried to use his plans to build a working tank about 6 or 7 years ago and they found the drawings were unworkable as drawn so either Leonardo was not being truthful or he never actually BUILT a tank.

The Germans had the first designs for one to use in WWI, but it was the British that first put one on the battlefield. It was the Mark I, nicknamed Little Willy. It was fielded in 1915 to solve a stalemate in the popular battle tactic of trench warfare. The tracks would allow the tank to carry troops safely over the trenches.
If you want to go further back, da Vinci designed the first armored vehicle.

Actually, over 2000 years ago. The Mesadonias. The Trojan Horse was developed on a variation of what our tanks do today. If you don't want to go back that far, many great minds such as Da Vinci had built plans and prototypes of these machines we use today.
PS no kidding!
