because part of NYC is an island. [manhatten.] so if the polar icecaps rose in water level, would this state be wiped out?

The short answer is that New York is not in any danger from rising water levels. The reason is simple, as some areas of ice are melting others are growing. No one knows if there is a trend up or down. However, any change is anticipated to be very small if anything at all.

One thing to realize is that sea levels have been rising since the end of the last ice age:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise

130 meters (400 feet) in 18,000 years.

But this is less than a meter per century. Few human structures last more than a century. With global warming, this rate may increase, and by the time global warming ends (perhaps 5000 to 10,000 years from now) the sea level may be 200 meters higher yet. This will certainly flood NYC, but it won't flood the whole world.

If all the ice in Greenland melted, sea levels would rise about 20 feet, which is enough to flood parts of New York. And most of Holland. And lots of other places. If all the ice in Antarctica melted I hear the sea level would go up a couple hundred feet. But nobody is predicting that it will all melt, at least not in the next 100 years. The most extreme predictions call for a one or two foot rise in sea level in 100 years.

Well considering how long it will take for the land ice to melt for New York to be flooded, and other parts of the world, it would probably take several hundred years. I know the way the way the global warming people put it, it seems like come a period of 10 years for all of New York to be flooded but that's just not the case. So if you are going to be around for another 2-3 hundred years sure New York will be flooded :), Other wise I wouldn't worry............

At the current rate, it will never happen. The antarctic ice mass is actually growing when you look at the net processes.Under optimal conditions for melting, it would still take at lest 1000 years to melt the Antarctic ice. If that time ever comes, NYC will either be a floating city or an afterthought.

New York and a lot of other places around the world. Most of
Bangladesh would disappear, many of the small island chain nations in the Pacific would also be gone, etc. so it's not just NY.
