7 eggs.

1st bridge: 4 eggs (1/2 of 7 is 3.5 plus .5 eggs = 4)
2nd bridge: 2 eggs (1/2 of remaining 3 is 1.5 plus .5 eggs =2)
3rd bridge: 1 egg (1/2 of remaining 1 is .5 plus .5 eggs = 1)

In a perfect world, tolls on roads and bridges would work if you could put the money collected into a fund set aside JUST for the use in repairing roads and bridges. The repair of roads and bridges would then be funded by those who use them the most and help to ease taxes. The Massachusetts Turnpike is an example of a good way to use tolls. You pick up a ticket when you get onto the highway then depending on where you get off you pay the toll. But the question is could a fund be set up so foolproof to prevent our government from taking from it to pay for their pet projects, to return favors to lobbyists and special interest groups. (Democrats and Republicans are BOTH guilty of that for those of you who always make it a party issure!) I don't think that would be possible however, somehow somebody would find a loophole or challenge the constitutionality of the right to keep the fund intact . Look at the argument over the Second Amendment of the Constitution and the right to bear arms in Washington DC. Look what the government has done to destroy our Social Security System. I don't know what the answer is, but something needs to be done. Not enough honest people in the government. The fact that our government has become to big and to cumbersome doesn't help. And just for those of you who will want to jump all over me, I am an Independent and DONOT follow any party lines. I think for myself!!! Addendum (15hrs later): One thing that I have been thinking about is why not go back to using more railroads for both merchandise transportation and travel. This would take a lot of wear and tear off our highways. They could be owned and maintained by private companies and take the pressure off the government. The only problem with this is that a lot of the rails have been dismantled, but they could be rebuilt. There would be less heavy vehicle traffic on our highways and less accidents. Trains could be developed that don't use fossil fuels so there would be less pollution too. Our roads would be safer and not need so much repair, our environment would be cleaner and it would create good paying jobs. People in the government wouldn't be able to use the capital for their own personal projects. The cost for using the railroad would be funded by those who paid to use it.

You started with seven eggs. The first toll was 4 eggs, the second was 2 eggs and the third was 1 egg.

Yep. Seven.

7-(3.5+0.5) = 3

3-(1.5+0.5) = 1

1-(0.5+o.5) = 0
