PTFE is a form of Teflon made by Dupont Company. If it is heated to a high temperature, it emits a poisonous gas. It's derivation is fluorine. It was discovered by Roy Plunket when he asked his assistant Rebok (not the shoe guys) to store the fluorine gas container in the back room over the extended holiday weekend. At the time, he didn't know that the container had a small pin hole leak. When they came back from the long weekend, Plunket asked Rebok to get the container. Rebok fetched it and when Plunket tried to use it, it wouldn't put out any gas. The gauge showed that it had gas, so in his curiosity, he asked Rebok to open it up. They found this white, very slick powder in the bottom of the container and it was clogging the gas port, not allowing the gas to come out. The powder was PTFE Teflon. It was used in World War II gun barrels to make the shells go farther. It was a military secret for years before it was finally commercialized. Fluorine depletes the body of iodine and can be one of the most lethal poisons. When Teflon is made, the poisonous value is not relevant until it is heated to over 600 degrees. It is considered inert to the body. good luck

This highly unique material was accidentally discovered by Dupont chemist, Roy Plunkett working with Freon gasses in 1938.

The residual powder that remained in the canister came to be known as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Later to be registered and patented by Dupont.

It was used as an insulator for electrical power cables. I worked in a cable factory which produced such cables. Exposure to its fumes caused workers to suffer fron "PTFE Flu". This was very unpleasant and led to other plastics such as PVC and polyethylene being used in its place.

Poly(tetra fluoro ethylene).

It's a very high melting point plastic material which is resistant to most normal chemicals and has a very low co-efficient of friction-i.e it's slippery-which is why it's used to coat non stick cookware etc.

polytetraflouroethalyne. Top tip: dont breath the vapour/smoke from PTFE if it burns as it is highy toxic, not condusive for healthy lungs !!!!!!
