I have a front projector system (HD1000U) and standard upconverted discs look "almost" but not quite as good as HD-DVD's. It's good enough for me, especially with a 110" screen. You really get into the movie.

The Oppo is considered to be the best upscaling standard DVD player around. Check out their website and the links to reviews of their products. However, the upscaling on standard DVDs won't be as good as any HD-DVD or Blu Ray player.
Edit: Walyank, I'm curious to know what mods would cost you $1000? For that you might as well get both a HD-DVD and Blu Ray player.

Near? That's a relative term. It certainly can look better than 480i on a 480i tv. It all depends how large you project it. On a 100" screen, it will look worse than on a 50" screen. That's because the upscaling circuitry has to make up, or invent, the pixels that aren't there.
With HD-DVD and BD, the extra resolution is encoded in the disc, so it looks much better than standard DVD.

YES. Enough to make a person think thrice about having to replace their existing DVD collection with Blu-Ray/HDDVDs and the expensive corresponding player (let alone the insecurity of wondering if you made the right format commitment!)
I am a demanding viewer and I LOVE what my Samsung upconverting DVD player (with HDMI output) does for my DVD viewing experience.
Its like the never-satisfied audiophile who no longer listens to the music, but is preoccupied with what it "sounds" like. ENJOY THE FRAKKIN' MOVIE ALREADY!

the main earnings of connecting an upscaling participant by HDMI to a HDTV is that the sign maintains to be interior the digital area over that connection, extremely than stepping into the process the pointless digital -> analogue -> returned to digital conversion which you get whilst employing a SCART cable, which could bring about degradation of image high quality. the certainly upscaling function could be of earnings, yet provided that that's extra desirable than the upscaling it is geared up into the HDTV itself. do no longer forget that upscaling purely smooths out the image, it would not upload extra factor. you may by no skill get actual HD selection from a bathroom popular DVD. in case you do no longer concepts plunking down £33, however, why no longer choose for it. it will truly look extra desirable than what you're getting now over your previous-college SCART cable, yet do no longer assume to be blown away by skill of the version or something. in case you get one from Argos, you're able to as properly attempt it out and then take it returned for a refund in case you spot no progression.

We have an upsclaler that's built into the PS3 and the movies for sure don't look as good as true HD, but they do look considerably better than on a regular DVD player.

I own an Oppo DV 981 which was amazing when I first got it but then I had it modified. Let me tell you, I don't care how long the HD/BlueRay war goes on, I am quite happy with what I watch.

Stock this player is quite affordable. Mine with the mods ran me about $1,000. Seems expensive but if you look at high end gear, it's not.

You can be very disappointed with an UpConverting DVD player, don't buy one until you see it demonstrated. Some of them actually are not as good as a standard old player.
