The verb is "to cane" as in "to hit with a cane." Because the head master used to use his walking stick!
So it would be "caned."
Read Stalky and Co, or Tom Brown's Schooldays--there's a lot of caning in them. Or indeed, in Dickens, particularly Nicholas Nickleby.
