Why has everyone developed the words "It's like" into their vocabulary. Either it is something or it isn't. "It's like.... you know... " I think it's left over Valley Girl Talk that made it's way mainstream. It's like... I don't expect to change the world.. but it's like... i'd really like to know how it started. "It's like...OMG" STOP... already. It's like... I can't take it anymore. Anyways, that aside... I just want to know who started this saying. Was it in a song? or a popular TV show? It's like... can anyone tell me? and like... don't talk smack to me! No question is stupid. (That was probably true until the invention of Yahoo Answers)

It's a space saver, similar to "Ummm," "Uhhh..." and "You know." When people are getting their thoughts together, sometimes their mouths work faster than their brains, so they insert one of those space savers. I don't know why people do it while they're typing. Maybe force of habit?

Some people prefer the use of space savers. My mother hates it when I use them. She says she'd rather me pause to collect my thoughts instead of saying "like" or "you know." My brother, on the other hand, will hang up the phone if I pause for too long. He says he'd rather hear me use the space savers because he thinks the connection went bad if I just go silent all of a sudden.

A similar issue bothered me a good while ago. I found myself using the phrase with alarming frequency, and I decided that it was in my best interest to reprogram my speaking habits so that I would say something similar to "it's like" that would sound like it were neither a filler-phrase nor an attempt at sounding like a pompous dick. I discovered that it was impossible because phrases like "it's not unlike" or "it's similar to" or "it parallels" are longer or more bombastic and english-speaking people are so enthralled by simile that constant comparisons, even if there is absolutely nothing to compare, invigorate the most intrinsic part of a person's being. That, and Moonunit Zappa was really funny...funny to the extent that everyone wanted to talk like her.

I think it is left over from the Valley Girl talk. I find that I will use "it's like" when I'm strectching the truth a little bit. Can't speak for others. Maybe they do use it simply as a filler. Toastmasters would certainly help break us of the habit.

It's just a phrase that gives stupid people a chance to think about what they're saying before they do.
