Here's a technical article on Golf Balls and how there are about 5,000 patents out for golf balls because they all are made different and have diff compressions, spin ratings, etc....

When you start a round you declare what ball you are using - such as a Nike 4. Then everyone in your group knows which ball is yours and they won't be taking swings at it. It is also useful to keep track of another player, such as why did he start out with a Nike 4 and just putt in a Nike 1.

The numbers on a golf ball such as 1,2,3,4 is when you buy the golf balls in a package of usually 12 (4 sleeves of 3 balls), the 1,2,3,4 stand for what number of sleeve it is

Ex. One sleeve with 3 balls in it have all the same number on it such as say 1, this means it is sleeve #1 out of the 4 sleeves that comes in a 4 sleeve package.

The number on the ball harks back to the days before decent permanent markers were available to identify which ball belonged to which golfer.

I've seen all single digits 0 - 9 on balls and have no issue with this; except for the fact that I only have number 2s of one kind only, and a hole in my right pocket for journeys into the rough!

The companies just place numbers on the balls in case someone who is golfing with you happens to be hitting the same type of ball. It's just one more way to tell who's ball is whos.

The numbers help me keep track of how many balls I've lost! If I make it beyond 4, it's time to hit the clubhouse (not with a ball, of course!)

i don't think its anything, just so you can distinguish one from another, there will be a lot of titleists out there so if you know your number your less likely to knick someone elses ball
