ok, first let me tell you that kindergarten IS NOT a requirement in my state, and this is the first year that they have all day kindergarten instead of the am/afternoon stuff. i have been carefully weighing my options here, for the simple fact that my school is very picky. for instance, one of the requirements that they have is the child HAS to be able to write their name. now while my boys aren't 100% on it, they do get it pretty close. they know their abc's but don't always recognize the letters. they know numbers, but don't always recognize the number. they cannot read yet, which is not unusual. They will be 5 at the end of July. Perosnally, i do not think that they are ready to start-and i would much rather have them wait til next year to start instaed of having them start & the teachers deciding they aren't ready & sending them home. i believe that would upset them. does this make sense to anyone?

yes it makes perfect sense to me. Here is a list of things my 5 year old son had to know.

His phone number
His address
keep working on recognizing letters
they have to know how to count to 20
how to write 1-10 on paper
Work on the name. first and last is good
use scissors and glue
holding a pencil the right way
count by 5's
follow 2 step directions
they should recognize a few every day words ( I,a,the,me,we)

i got all this off my sons very first report card.

It makes sense, but I think if they were sent back it would upset you more than your boys (5 year olds tend to get over things quickly). Why not try a montessori school, where they are less strict and more accomodating to your kids' needs?

I totally understand what you mean. My friend didn't go the kidergarten untill he was 6. If they get ahead of the class in later years have them test to be bumped up a grade.

Um, aren't they supposed to teach them that stuff in kindergarten? :lol

However if you don't think they are ready or if you are not ready ( I know it goes both ways sometimes) it is perfectly alright to keep them home another year.

If you feel they are not ready, then don't send them. Trust your instincts. It's better not to send them until their ready then to have them sent home because they are not ready.

this is crazy. this is what kindergarten is for. to teach the letters. numbers. and how to spell. we are required to go to kin.
if they dont go. do they just go to first grade? or do they start kin. next year.
well if they have to start kin. next year i would send them. so they dont get behind. i would work with them on their names. and send them . they need to learn.
that school is crazy...
good luck

It's your choice. There is nothing wrong with keeping them home another year.
