yes, your credit is examined as well. if you have more than one kid between you, a FED will be done to make sure that you can afford to live on an E1 or E2 salary.. which sucks. The Navy only allows new enlistees to have 3 dependents: a spouse and two children. anything more than that requires a waiver.. which may not be granted, since the Navy is overmanned at this time.
A Background check will be done on you if his rating requires a Clearance. It can and will be denied based on information in your file that is discovered.
Bottomline: wait until after A school if you want the least amount of paperwork and hassles. getting married beforehand could mess up his shipping date, and if he misses that, he will lose his A school slot, and possibly be kicked out of DEP altogether.

If he gets married he shouldn't have to get a Dependency waiver unless you are in the Service as well. I am unsure why the recruiter is telling him to wait.
If he is doing a financial eligibility form, that is for his clearance.
Normally for a Secret only his background and credit is checked, so long as you are a natural born US Citizen. For a Top Secret or higher, your credit will often be checked as well, and possibly a mini background check on you.
Also even though your credit is being checked it does not count as a normal inquiry (like you were applying for a loan) it wont even show up on your credit report.
Its important he lists all debts. The process is much faster if everything is noted, and explained. 'Forgetting' to mention a bill that's 6 months late will stop the clearance until its explained, or resolved.
I must clarify the 1st post:
There are no 'waivers' for bad credit. None. They will add remarks as to why the debt is there (ie ID theft, being appealed, incorrect entry). If there is a justifiable debt, you will have to pay it to get the clearance. Either by setting up a new payment plan, or joining a company that consolidates bills for you. An investigator will contact you if there are any overdue debts on your credit. If you have a bankruptcy in the past 5 years, and its not discharged, don't hold your breath.
They check back 10 years for Bankruptcy and 7 for credit.

If you enlist with any dependants you have to get a dependent waiver. it's easy to obtain so I don't know what his recruiter is talking about. If you get married before he goes, you'll get all your benefits while he is gone (ID card, BX, commissary, medical, BAH). Yes, they do a financial eligibility determination. they ahve to be sure that you can survive on his pay and pay any existing bills. It can be very hard to live on $550 every two weeks if you have children and bills. YES, when they do background checks they check the member AND the spouse. Depending on the type of clearance they will also check his and your parents. If you or him are behind on your debts or have high debt, any criminal activity, he won't get a clearance and that can affect the jobs he can get.
My advice, get married before he goes. Tht way you can get your benefits. Make sure yours and his credit is in order . You don't have to have great credit but you should not have any past due bills or large debts. They can issue a waiver for bad credit but if they have to issue too may waivers, they won't bother with him at all.
The navy may be a little different from the AF but I wouldn't think it would be too different

not sure about the navy but i know how the airforce works on this. basically they look at anything in their life that could affect their ability to do their job. For each of those things they have to have a waiver, if you have over a certain number of waivers you cant enlist. and the credit as others have said is mostly for security clearance. and yes depending on his clearance they wil lprobably do a complete background check on you as well. i have a friend whose wife was on probation for a felony charge and they let him enlist..but he has like no clearance more or less....and his wife isnt even allowed on the base, they had to get off base housing. now he got an overseas assignment and she cant go with him (it was supposed to be 4 year accompanied and is now 2 year unacompanied) because she cant get a passport on her own and the military wont help her due to her record. they just want to know what they are getting themselves into...because your problems indirectly become their problems if they happen to affect your husbands mobility.
