a piece of curly willow makes an excellent wand.. candles a challice Just and ordinary win glass will do.. incence burner crystals.. depends on what school of the craft you desire to engage really.
The basic components of spells and rituals are to get your mind thinking in the proper fashion to implement what you want to do.

Things such as the incense, candles, magical implements like the wand or components of spells and rituals are basically the same when it comes to energy work. The rituals have the advantage of drawing more power quickly and getting quicker results. This doesn't mean that spells are not comparable to rituals. They both do the same thing, but I personally seldom use rituals. I simply seldom need them to accomplish a desired result. This is due to my actual age and experience as a practitioner vs my physical age in this life. The best example that I have of this is the difference between being an apprentice or being a master. I too am still the student. Though I may not be a master I am far from apprentice. You too will learn what works best for you as I have. OK back to basics

The first component of any magical operations is:

Intent: you know there is a problem which has a magical solution. You have to also decide what you want to happen and how you want to do the magic;

Structure: you decide what results you want and decide how to accomplish this result. You then structure the spell. This is how many times you intend to do the spell. Example - once a day for seven days, once a week for 3 weeks etc. You also never structure how a result is to happen. You just say the result that you want and specify that you want this result.

Magical implements or any other parts of a spell: You must have all of them ready before whatever you are doing and enough to last for the length of time you will be doing the ritual or spell.

Timing: There are tables of planetary times and the best times to get a result in many different books. The different days also have a planet assigned to them and a list of things that planet represents. Try to have the correct day for your purpose and then try to do it at the proper time. All these things add to the energy and results of a spell. You can still cast, but the effectiveness and speed of application will be less.. Think of it as a bandaid VS stitches.. Depending on what seek to accomplish you may wish to concider timing.

Silence and Preparation: You should spend at least an hour before a ritual or spell contemplating what results you want and make sure that you are mentally prepared. It becomes easier to do magic as time goes on but at first you should be sure to do this. You should have the phone unplugged a private area to work in and should not tell anyone what you are doing. Implementation this is when you visualize what you want to happen when you do the ritual or spell. You visualize the end results and you don't fill in how they are supposed to occur.

Contemplation: Relax and contemplate how the energy flowed the result you want and then give thanks to the deities of your choice for helping you.

The next thing to realize is that magic has principals to make up the components of spells. The first of these is the law of contagion. The reason why voodoo and a great many other spells work is because of this rule. It basically means that a like object can be affected by magic. A voodoo doll consecrated and named after a person with an artifact of their body or writing will make it where the spell affects that person. Money used and energized in a spell will bring more money to you, and so on. It is also why herbs, incense, and other components of a spell are effective. They symbolize different things that all help to add energy and emphasis on what you want for results.

The next rule is the rule of cause and effect. This is the rule that explains how the energy, proper intent, visualization and components all affect each other. It doesn't mean that if you get a couch Joe Smith is never going to get a couch because you took it. It means all of these things affect what we call as reality to bring our results into being. Results can be changed by unplanned circumstances at times, but if everything works properly you receive what the spell is about. The best example that I can use for this is the lottery. Everyone is broadcasting their intent to win money and they broadcast it all on their numbers. The purpose of a spell is to make it so your broadcast is stronger and wins out over all the others broadcasts. Any spell you do has results that affects others but with the proper intent and thought none of them will harm others and it might actually improves things for them.

The next rule is the rule of Karma or it basically means that what you put out is what you get in life. Major religions have many variations upon this but the main thing to remember in magic is that you are expected to know better. If you hate and harm others the gods have a real tendency to teach you quickly and with great vigor. The reason this happens is you can see what happens to others when you wish harm upon them. No one is exempt from this rule. You are also expected to listen to them and accept the fact that they have no ulterior motives. They are just trying to make your life work better for you. Many of us tie ourselves into something having to happen in the exact way that we want it to happen. You then trap yourself into that by your attachment to this is the only way that it will happen. You are better seeing the end results and asking for the Gods help in making it come into existence. Clinging to a set of circumstances can sometimes result in you being out of touch with what reality is about. We are the students in this life no matter how much we learn or we wouldn't be here on earth.

Another reason why spells and rituals work is the energy that we put into them. You end up having your mind use your energy systems to draw in energy from around you into your charkas. You then have the energy flow out of you into the ritual or spell. This is why magic works the manipulation of the very forces that form up life and how things occur. You have to know how to draw in and circulate energy. I have read so many different ways of doing this that are correct that I feel people know a lot about this subject. The main thing is to circulate it from one foot the left into the earth and then circulate it back into the right foot. The reason that this is important is that it effectively grounds you so you aren't harmed by any energy surges. I know I draw in energy through every energy port I have when I am doing a spell or ritual. I believe that each spell or ritual sets up your system to draw energy into the spell in a certain way. I know that there are as many different types of energy around as there are spells. You seem to draw in different energies in different ways according to the intent and the style of the spell.

In ritual based magic the next thing you will probably need to know is how to consecrate candles. You consecrate a candle by anointing it with the oil that is of the same purpose as your spell. Frankincense is common and you then say a simple prayer over it. Novena candles are seven day candles enclosed in a glass container. You put a simple cross or symbol on the top of them and then say the prayer on the side.

A wish candle is one with seven knobs on it. You burn a knob a day until your wish or spell is done. A double acting candle is a candle with two colors. Most of these candles have black on the inside or a black half of the candle. They are used to banish things. An example of this is a red and black candle is for protection. It sends the evil back upon the person who has tried to harm you, and restores the good things in your life. A green and black candle is to banish money problems and restore prosperity to your life. There are a variety of colors and they can be very handy to have around. The colors in candles also have purposes. The most common ones are-

Black: used for protection, preventing gossip, removing bad influences such as people meddling in your life. Black is good for banishing, separation, and keeping things hidden;

Light Blue: calmness, healing, getting things under control, peace, tranquility and pleasant dreams;

Dark Blue: organization, structure, and adding control.
Brown: used for confusion spells, grounding unwanted energy. Returning bad actions to others;

Gold: for prosperity and security;

Green: growth, fertility, prosperity, gambling luck.
Lavender: to remove stress, study and use the intellect;

Orange: use for energy, motivation and causing change.
Pink: love, affection, harmony, empathy, and friendship;

Purple: use for spirituality, mental ability, psychic power, as well pure energy from the source;

Red: taking, charge, passion, vitality, sexual energy, and fire energy;

Silver: reduce inner turmoil and gain a peaceful frame of mind;

White: a substitute for any previous color, use it for mental clarity and inspiration on how to cast spells;

Yellow: communication, creative endeavors and having your needs met when no one will listen to you. It brings the person joy and happiness;

Another interesting part of spell casting is symbols. These are sacred or symbolic focus points for your energy. There are as many different symbols are there are types of magic. An example of some is the cross symbolizes divine help and protection. The pentagram can be charged with any purpose. The Egyptian ankh symbolizes long life. The Germanic runes symbolize different principals according to which rune you are using.

The next thing to mention is names. The Gods and Goddesses of every religion symbolize different purposes and powers. This includes the symbolism associated with Jesus, Mary, and the catholic saints. There is a god, goddess or religious symbol for any magical work that you can accomplish. A good place to check out all the names and purposes is the Encyclopedia Mythica upon the web. Names are used to symbolize the forces that make your spell work.

Herbs used in spells are also supposed to help the energy tie into the purpose of the spell. They symbolize the different planets, gods, and elements. An example of a herb is cloves- it is symbolized by Jupiter and all the purposes of the planet Jupiter which includes home protection. It is ruled by the element of fire, and is burned to banish bad influences from the home. There are to many to list in this lesson but there are also a lot of good books on the subject. A good one with indexes in the back is Everyday Magic by Dorothy Morrison. It can be bought at the Amazon.Com bookstore on the web.

Rhyming your spells also adds more power and energy to the spell. If you modify the words remember this and use it to change the results to what you want. A simple spell to say which shows this is Turn Spell Turn, Burn, Spell, Burn, Send the evil back whence it came. The rhyme sets the power into effect. You say it three times, which is a magical number and it aids in the ability of the spell-caster to put extra power into it.

Everyone should also remember that there is what is considered magical numbers. These are 3, 7, 9, and 13. You can use these numbers in spells by saying the spell the amount of times of the magical number. You can use these numbers in reversals by sending 3 times 3 problems back to those who have harmed you. You can also send 3 times 3 the amount of good back to people who have helped you. It adds to the spells when there is a magical number of verses are used.

I guess the next step of this lesson is for the student to decide to do a simple spell. Consider all of these factors and think about the results that you want to have when you do the spell. Write down everything you do and rate which are the most successful.

All you need is in your heart and mind, however I must say that sometimes tools help us to focus better and to enter the other realm (so-to-speak) more easily.

I personally have a wand handmade myself with a stick and affixed with crystals and carvings. I have many stones and crystals as I am into crystal magick. Candles are always nice for visualization and I just like sitting by candlelight as it helps me to meditate. I also have a small cauldron and incense burner. These things are relatively cheap and if you are really on a budget, just buy a few candles for a couple bucks and search in nature for pretty stones and make a wand or broom or anything that will help you. There is no standards and your tools do not define you, they only assist you.

I hope that helped.

Most rituals will include a couple tools, but visualization works just as well. Usually an athame, chalice, wand, staff, sword, incense burner, bowl, colored candles, food/drink (cakes & ale). Sometimes we used sand to outline the circle, but it was just for visual aesthetics. Most of those could be hand made from wood if you'd like.

It's a matter of personal preference though, if you feel like a tool belongs, use it, if it doesn't make sense, dont.

There are four primary tools used in Wiccan rituals, along with a multitude of other things you can use, that some rituals use, or that you may use to decorate your temple with symbolism that makes your rituals work for you.

The four primary tools are:
Athame or Air Dagger, air symbol, used for casting a circle and symbolic of the element of air

Wand, or Fire wand, symbolic of the element of fire and masculine sexual symbol.

Chalice, symbolic of the element of water, and feminine symbol of sexuality.

Earth Disk, symbolic of the element of earth, and a purification symbol.

I once knew someone who said, "A real witch is someone who can cast a spell while standing naked in her shower at three o'clock in the morning."

I agree. :)

It's all about emotion, intent, focus, faith, and imagination.

Anything else is just a prop. Nothing wrong with props.. but nothing required about them, either.
