I'm 5' 10 and weight about 220 pounds. My goal weight is 160 lbs. and toned. Do I need to lose pounds before I can become tone. I know 5'10 @220 sounds fat and sloppy but I'm actually athletic and most people are surprised I weigh that much.

you can kill two birds w/ one stone man. you do both at one time.by working out trying to tone up you'll lose weight so what you need to do is just keep working out.
just exercise daily make sure its lite weight and high reps.
ex: 3-4sets of 15, 12, 10
and if you want to get some mass , just do heavy weight w/ low reps.... 10, 8, 6
lots of cardio for toning up, b/c your tryen to burn more caloriese then you consume so w/ that said it brings us to your diet.
eat 6 times a day (3 small meals and 3 snacks, eating about every 2-3hrs that is) this keeps your metabolism up so that'll help w/ burning calories too. and dont foget to portion also
sooooo
1)lite weight high rep
2)cardio as much as you can
3) eat 6 times (portioned)
good luck to you

You can certainly tone muscle while you lose weight--in fact, you probably won't do well just by dieting if you don't exercise also. If you do a variety of exercise and build muscle gently, you should have a much easier time of losing weight, and will end up nice and toned. If people are surprised at your weight, you probably are toned now. If so, and if you are doing exercise activities, you should be able to do more a more robust exercise regimen and help yourself lose the extra pounds. I don't know if you should aim for 160 or not--for some 5'10" guys who have good muscle weight, that might actually be pretty skinny. So try to get healthy habits of food and exercise and whereever that takes your body will be just right.

220 at 5'10" is only sloppy if it's all fat. A better goal weight would be 190 with some good muscle on ya too and not just scrawns. I'm 5'11" and weigh 215, but it's mostly muscle. You can lose weight and sculpt at the same time unless your a seasoned body builder which few people are. Also gaining muscle will help you lose fat since the muscles will help you metabolize the flab. Further, you don't want to lose weight too fast or your skin will hang, especially your gut and t!tties. Lose it at 1 - 2.5 lbs of fat per week, You may not lose total weight that fast since your will be gaining muscle too. Good luck.

No.
LISTEN! Get a TAE-BO dvd and exercise by kicks and punches.

You have FUN and you can imagine somebody's face you'd like to punch-just kidding--well, no I'm not,.. BUT, you tone up before you KNOW IT!

in case you advance muscle, your muscle groups burn energy even in state of being inactive, so which you're able to be high quality. Swapping out most of the construction/firming for greater cardio wouldnt harm the two.
