This largely depends on your definition of 'moderate'. If you mean drinking a couple of pints of beer or 1/2 bottle of wine on five or fewer nights a week, then I don't think anyone would claim there is a problem. But people who drink EVERY night, or do regular binges or a lot more than the amount I've mentioned, are susceptible to some of the alcohol-related mental conditions. How susceptible depends on the individual, so this isn't a question to which there is a simple yes/no answer - it all depends on personal susceptibility, amount drunk and the length of time. It is also true that someone with a pre-existing mental illness may worsen dramatically with alcohol over-use.

I'd be interested in knowing the answer to that too?

My mother lived a squeaky clean life. Never more than 1 glass of wine and then only for a very special occasion. Now she has Alzheimer's and it's like she's high 100% of the time.

My brother and I just shrug and say see what clean living gets you?

Theres a thin line between moderate, social and abusive drinking but moderate does have benifits..mainly for the heart. http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/aa16.htm
