No, but it can guarantee a sun burn. Use tanning oil that contains a little sunblock. There are some that help hold a tan and contain SPF4, which will still make you tan, but help block harmful rays. Even tanning booths have harmful UVA/B rays. As far as keeping your tan, use lotion that has a little self tanner in it.

Try not to tan too often. My mother was a SLO town girl and she used to tan all the time and go to santa cruz and surf. She now has myomas all over her body. Non-cancerous, but definately unattractive. Also, tanning causes premature aging. It may look hot now, but it definately will look gross in about 10 years.
