You shouldn't feel bad for being chosen for the promotion!
You were chosen because you were the best candidate for the position. I have been into management for several years now and sometimes it is tough when friendships are involved.
I have learned the hard way that it is best to keep your employees as employees and not your hang out buddies. I'm not saying not to be friends with them, of course you should.
I think the best thing you should do is try to ask the girl to go to lunch with you and have a nice talk with her. Just explain how you feel. She should not hold it against you and if she does then her immaturity might very well be why she wasn't the one chosen for the position. Break the ice now instead of waiting until you are scheduled to work together.

You got promoted because you obviously were the best one for the job. Now you will have to show your managerial skills in dealing with a member of staff who will possibly have a grudge against you. Personally, I would have a one-off little meeting with her to let her know you hope that she can work with you, and how you are relying on her to help you to fit into your new job. Then just a handshake and a "no hard feelings?" should be the end of it.

This is a pretty common thing. If she had a reasonable shot at the managerial position, she should also be mature enough to accept the situation (either permanently or until she can apply for something else).

If you're afraid this will be a problem anyway, ask your human resources dept if there's a recommended way to clear the air.

First, why is this in Singles & Dating? Second, you cannot be concerned with the way others feel when you are in a situation like that. You did not cheat your way into that job position, you earned it fair and square. Celebrate your new job and don't let that other person ruin it for you. Just be friendly to her and others you work with.

Do you feel you deserve the promotion?

If you worked hard, then you deserve it. There are lots of people who are out there who cry "poor me". Just because she's worked there longer, doesn't mean she is best for the job.

I'm sure it was given to you for a reason--and that's no reason to gloat.

Make sure you are the best darn manager she's ever had, and she'll be happy.

yes you should. Because that girl obviously was working hard and trying to get that position. Don't feel too bad though, because there was nothing you can do about it. And you obviously worked harder for it than she did. It might be awkward, but that's life. And if she holds a grudge, she is a twisted person because you EARNED it.

As long as you didn't sleep your way up to that position, then you shouldn't feel guilty in the least. If you got promoted for your skills you should be very proud.
