I understand exactly what you mean and totally agree with you, 'British' is a meaningless word these days, the only people that use it are old people full of silly nostlagia for the British empire or WWII.
the difference now though is that whereas in the past only Scottish and Welsh didnt want to be classed as British , now us English are saying we don't want to either - and that means it is only a matter of time befor the union collapses and we are all independant. As soon as the first country leaves the union it will end the UK all together - take out one support and the whole rotten structure will come tumbling down.
It's only a matter of time, in 20 years there will be no union left I dont think. Obviously that is what I hope, but also what I genuinely believe will happen. The pro-unionists are living on borrowed time and I think most of them now know it.

Well, the differences in the regional cultures makes a great country. We all know that scots are different than welsh, but being different is not bad.

It baffles me too. Although I can see how its an easy mistake to make, after all English is the main language in the UK and England is the biggest country where the majority of stuff happens.
I usually feel the need to assert the fact that Im Welsh tho.

Because it is?
The united Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The act of union with Scotland was in 1707, notwithstanding a couple of later disputes (the '15. and the '45).
For some purposes Wales, England and Scotland have retained separate national identities, (Not least, knocking seven bells out of each other at rugby) and recent devolution changes have re-introduced Welsh and Scottish parliaments.
But I've noticed confusion, particularly in the USA.
A few years ago I decorated my stall at a convention in California with the flag of St George.
Many mistook me for the red-cross first aid post.
They all said they'd have recognised the union flag, almost invariably called the union jack.
In September I'm going again. I'm taking the Cornish flag with me this time, just for fun.
"A good sword and a trusty hand,
A merry heart and true,
King James's men shall understand
What Cornish lads can do."
(Politics runs slow in Cornwall).

We do have the same Government. The Welsh and Scottish Assemblies are not Governments and have limited powers. The English do not have an Assembly at all.
And what the hell does "what gives?" mean? Talk English!

Great Britain is not a country, it is an island. Anyone who says it is a country needs an education.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a country, consisting of four countries. We share a central government in London, the capital of the UK. We have a monarchy and are therefore a kingdom as opposed to a republic.
What is interesting to me though is that I am English as well as British, but English first.

I think you watched "Braveheart" one too many times. The reason you have it all labeled as a country is because today, they are under one government.
