I only use them when I have to, such as when I'm making icing flowers. I don't agree at all that they're tasteless, I sure can taste them, and the paste ones can taste worse. If you do want to make things more colorful, a little bit won't hurt, you just have to be careful not to use too much. Also, I've used things other that food coloring to dress things up. You can get very concentrated juice syrups that not only make icing beautiful, they taste great too.

Food coloring, like extracts, is mostly alcohol based. And, a little goes a very long way!!! Depending on how deep you want the color and how much frosting you have to color, you'll only want a few drops of the stuff. You might want to consider some of the "pastes" they sell now as well.

Its fine. There's really no problem with it. Regular food coloring is completely safe and non-toxic, and does not need to be cooked before eating. Just add some to the frosting until you like the color and ice away. Be careful, because sometimes it stains.

Food coloring has no flavor, but just a few drops in your cupcakes or frosting will give you plenty of color. It's really lots of fun to use.
