Why NJ? Is it to get far away or do you have a job lined up?
If you’re thinking, that you can just show up in NJ and drag down a good job, forget it. It takes a lot of money to go job hunting and set up shop in a strange city, especially if you have no contacts.
Do you know how expensive, that part of the country is? Sure you can find an $800.00 charmer, just don't walk in the neighborhood at night.
My brother lived there a while back, he said in a half way decent area, the apartment's going to run you about $1,400.00 per month. (Just his idea of decent, not mine)
At a minimum you'll want to have three months rent, plus the security and damage deposits on hand. In my part of country it's usually the same as the monthly rent. So, to start you need the security deposit, the damage deposit and first month’s rent. If the rent is $1,000, you’re going to need $3,000, just to get the key to the front door.
Then you need cash to get, phone service, electric, water, cable, etc, if there’s a pipe or wire coming into your place, you pay for it’s function Also, at your age don’t be surprised if you can’t get service, without a large security deposit.
For example an 18 year old, with no renting history, no credit history, and no cosigner, can expect to drop a $500.00 deposit, with the electric company, in my neck of the woods. They’ve been burned to many times by young adults racking up bills and then not paying.
Our water company is an automatic $100.00 deposit for everybody, on your one year anniversary with the company, you choose a check or for them to apply it to your bill.
As you can see, you need to research and call a lot of people, to get the answers you need. Contact somebody from NJ if you can, get first hand information. The renting info I gave you, was second hand and that info is about 4 years old.
If there’s no real reason to go to NJ, I’d stay where I was at, if I were you. You may have a rough time with your family now, but if push comes to shove, I’m sure they’d help you in a tight spot. It’d be near impossible with you living in NJ and they being in Texas.
If you’re committed to going though, do your homework and whatever amount of money you think you may need, double it.
I moved three states away in 1989, and I knew no one at all. Back then to get everything paid for and running, it was like an even $3,000. I had to pay the $500 for electric, because I came from out of state, but they refunded to me after 3 months. Luckily, I had a job lined up, before I left my home state.
Sorry this is so long, but there’s no way to crib note this answer.

Look online at New Jersey papers and check the jobs sections and also rentals. My suggestion would be to find start with sharing an apartment with a few other people. Sometimes you can have really good luck and end up sharing a 3 br with 2 others that you get along with really well. You will need to have a job that would cover not just rent, but food and transportation. If you do not drive, then you'll save a bundle on car insurance. The rule of thumb is that you will need 3 times the rent when you are renting, you need to put down a damage deposit, and the first and last month's rent, so you'll need to save some money. A LOT of places also want references (a work reference, or other professional reference could be offered if you are honest about having never rented before.) If you don't have a job now, and don't plan on going to college yourself, then apply at different temp places... it will be good experience and a decent income. Good luck... I understand wanting to get away. Be careful though. In an ideal world, you will find someone who is in the same boat as you.

Well, look on the greyhound website for bus fair prices.
www.greyhound.com
You're looking at about $160 ish.
Or if you're driving your personal vehicle you're looking at about $400+ with gas prices the way they are now. (I just spent $360 driving to PA from TN)
Then look on
www.rent.com
to find apartments within your budget.
You have to figure that there will be an application fee, a deposit for the apartment, some will have you prepay 1st and last months rent. Then you will probably have to pay a deposit or some type of start up fee for utilities, etc. Groceries, gas money. Not sure if you have furniture or not, but you'll at least need a bed or something, you can buy a futon at walmart for like $100
starting out with nothing, I would expect to need about $3,000 if not more.

I wouldn't go any where without a job and a place to live. Don't be foolish, just because you think things are crazy with your family doesn't mean they will be easier on your own. Trust me, they will be harder and much scarier. My advice would be this:
1-get a job in Houston
2-save as much money as you can
3-get your own place in Houston
4-learn how to be on your own with some family support before you move to a different state
5-then decide if you really want to move to NJ
By not making any plans and just taking off without any money or a place to stay is how young people, male and female, end up dead, on drugs, living in the streets or prostituting themselves. Think long and hard before making any kind of big moves.

1st. Do you have a job, place to stay while you look for a place of your own, in New Jersey? If so you need to find a place to live near or surrounding area so getting to work is not an issue. You need at least 1yrs rent saved as a back up as New Jersey is not a cheap place to live. Also you need a plan. From you question it sounds as if you are really not to prepared to live on your own. Good luck.

You're leaving with no idea where you are going and what you are doing there? If you graduated from high school, you need to get registered for college classes and then you can move into a dorm. If your parents aren't willing to foot the bill and you didn't plan ahead for financial help, then you need to get a job and save up enough money to support yourself. Believe me, dealing with your crazy family is better than dealing with the predators who feed off of kids just like you.
Have you ever considered the military?

Well I hope you know someone in NJ before you move there. You have to do everything you can to save up some serious cash fast, because it is going to take some time to find a job and if you want to live then thats what you need MONEY!
Hopefully you have someone to stay with for a few weeks until you find a job.

The cost of living is more in Jersey...so you need to research an apartment there, find out how much you can afford....it might be 1000/month for a two bedroom...so save up your money from your job...and food is more costly there also...so is gas for the car....so you need to have a job when you get out there too....look up Monster.com or another job source for getting a job ahead of time...write out a monthly budget of what you will think you need for a month's time....then add it all up, and deduct from your paycheck for the month....you will see what money you have left...
Hope this helps...but it sounds like you need to just get away from your family if you can't afford to move...just stay away until 9pm or so, then go to your room to sleep....get up to your job, and be on your way the rest of the day....if you can do this, you will have saved alot of expenses.....Good Luck....

If you don't have a plan then you are probably not ready to move out. I would start by getting some kind of certification so you can at least make a decent amount to get by. Then I'd save up at least $3,000 to cover all deposits you will need when you get up there (rent, electric, gas, water, etc....). My best advice is to try to get into an apartment complex... most utilitites are included in rent.
