I'm looking for a state park or public beach on Long Island that allows stargazing (I am getting a permit). Does anyone know a specific place where the skies are dark and I can get a good dview of the Perseids meteor shower on August 20th? I am thinking about Sunken Meadow State Park or Crab Meadow State Park, both on the North Shore...is there much light pollution from Connecticut, which is right across the Long Island Sound? Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Parking Field 2 at Robert Moses is a bit darker than Sunken Meadow - you'll need a Stargazer Permit for either place. A better site, if you want to take a ride out East, is Custer Institute in Southold. They are having an observing party on the 11th, the peak night of the meteor shower. You can check the following websites for info on stargazing: www.custerobservatory.org, www.aosny.org.

They are both incredible choices but getting in after dark may be a challenge. I use to live 5 minutes from Crab Meadow and a bit further from Sunken Meadow ...in East Northport. I now live in Ocala Florida. I miss the water terribly. Have fun!

Sunday's Newsday gives information about star gazing. The only way you are allowed in state parks after sundown is with a night fishing permit.
