start making a list of guests to invite, then if you are going to have seating arrangements at your reception do that, pick out a church, contact a priest to set up the date, pick a place to have your reception, decide what your going to do about food, buffet or by the plate? pick a photographer/videographer if you decide you want one.

I have just finished planning my wedding which has been quite stressful. My wedding is in a few days and feel like i should have started planning and shopping around for the best deals as soon as I got the ring on my finger. You will find that a lot of places in the wedding service industry (florist, reception halls, bridal gown shops, etc) will do everything in their power to get as much money as they can from you. They think that b/c it is your wedding you are willing to go over the edge. Be cautious and shop around. I tried as much as possible while planning to get the best deals possible but sometimes things fall thorugh the crack. Start with the guest list, then look at reception halls, and when you find a dress you like don't tell them the real date if your wedding so that your dress will done way in advance.

Get an idea of how many people you want to invite and then start looking for locations that will accomodate that. Now is the perfect time of year cause you can visit and have a good idea of what they will look like next July. The location you choose will help determine color scheme and should have a list of vendors they have worked with in the past. Some even have wedding coordinators that will guide you. Also, start thinking about your dress and what you want your bridesmaids in.

Yes. A lot of things you might not NEED to have done right away, but if you have a certain place in mind for your ceremony or reception, you should book it as soon as possible before it's booked.
Plus, I don't know if you're religious or not, but some churches require you to do a marriage preparation in order to get married there, and you may have to start that soon.
Also, you'll want to start looking at dresses soon. Sometimes you can buy a dress of the rack, which is good, but some bridal shops have to order dresses which can take surprisingly long, plus you'll probably have to get alterations, so definitely make sure you're not cutting it too close when it comes to your dress!
Oh, and I also found the good DJ's (or bands if you want a band) can get booked quick, so you should start looking around for a DJ soon.
Some things can wait a few months. I waited until a bit closer to the wedding to order my flowers and cake.

Yes, I would go ahead and start planning the wedding. My wedding is a small wedding (50 people) and I am having a hard time planning it in 6 months. The first thing I would do is figure out where you want to have it and book it!!! I had an officiant in mind 6 months before the wedding and he was booked!!
I would get everything booked now, and start on the details... pick one thing each week you would like to get done.
Don't wait last minute to do the dresses. It takes 3-4 months to get them in!! Then you must get them altered, etc. I barely made the cut!!! Favors can sometimes be on backorder, etc. I would get things in order now:)

Definitely! It's never too early to get a good start on wedding planning. Most importantly, find your reception hall and church--they book up sometimes more than a year in advance! Get an approximate guest count, too...then everything else can be done a little at a time. Good luck! :)

Some things need to be done a year in advance. Start with the minister/officiant and church/location - to make sure you can get the date and time you want. Then, depending upon where you live, you may have to book the caterer, venue, and band.
