I am an american (22 years old), who wants to marry a Colombian guy (24 y/o). I was wondering in what state(s) of the US, same-sex/gay marriage is accepted/valid ?
What should I do, so that after marrying him in another country, he can come along with me to the US and settle down here or in Canada.

If you can provide me with websites, I would really appreciate it!

I would suggest checking with imigration because marrying an American citizen does not automatically guarantee you citizenship. I believe he would still need a Visa and other paperwork.

Also the state that do have legal same sex marriage only recognize the marriage in those states. You would be better off getting married in Canada, but I don't know if that would be legally recognized in the US.

If you really love this man, check with an imigration attorney and get him here the legal way.

Good luck!

Massachusettes is going to be your best bet, it's the only state where they're certified as a legal marriage status, Under the priveledges and immunities clauses in the Constitution, other states have to respect legal documents generated in any other state, such as marriage certificates, driver's licenses, etc.

Of course there is a huge debate over this since most other states won't recognize same-sex marriages and so the feds are getting involved and on and on and on.

So yeah, MA if you want it done in the U.S., but I think Canada has legalized same-sex marriage as well.

Forget the haters here (and everywhere else) and best of luck to you!

You'll want to look into immigration rules on same-sex spouses, wherever you get married. I don't believe they are treated the same as opposite-sex spouses under immigration law in the United States. Your spouse may have to secure permission to emigrate here for reasons independent of your marriage. For this reason, I think you might have better luck and an easier time of it going to Canada.

I got some clarification. You can get married in Massachusettes if you are a resident of MA or Rhode Island. They allow civil unions In Hawaii, CA, Conn, Maine, NJ, Vermont, Washington State and Washington DC. New Hampshire and Oregon will alow them starting January 2008. In your man's homeland of Columbia they also allow civil unions :-)

Don't let those detractors take anything away from you! Love is love.
Good for you and congratulations!

Well Mr. my advice to you is this.
Get more information on this matter so you won't be surprised after making a decision on any level (I'm refering of where to live) however you should go to Canada.
I'm wondering from what state are you? I'm curious that's all.
Stay out of Texas.
Good Luck.

Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts. It may be limited to Massachusetts residents only, though.

A few other states have domestic partnership or civil union laws.

You did not ask for opinions on the institution of same-sex marriage, only advice. So I limit my answer to what you asked.

Good luck.
