All the time.
It was a lot harder to find a good online friend when I was younger because I'd have my parents looking over my shoulder and saying, "How do you know Mary--if that is her real name--is who she says she is? 'She' might be a 55 year old pervert who will hunt you down and rape you!" It really got under my skin. I know internet stalkers are real, but gee whiz. They must have been thinking they were raising an idiot or something.
As an adult, it's still hard to find a good online friend because now the tables are turned. Now, I am suspected of being the 55-year-old internet pervert that is too dangerous to write to. That, and it's very hard for me to find other people who share my interests.

You can do that: it's a free country. Just be safe about it by not giving them any info that's too personal; like your social security #, or your credit card #. If they want that kind of info then their is a problem. Have fun finding your soul-mate girl!
