NO martial art or sport would come close to the cardio that a soccer player has, the only one who could come close would be a Thai fighter.

It depends on the persons training habits. On average I would think that practice for a sport is more physically demanding then a martial art training session. Our class does not spend time doing exercises, we are expected to do training on our own time so class can focus on pure martial knowledge.
Also, keep in mind that martial arts are designed to be efficient in movement while sports are not. In a real life situation you don't want to burn a lot of energy defending yourself.
So, over-all, I honestly feel that soccer and baseball provide more cardio exercise than martial arts.
But in the long run you will be able to do a martial art longer than you will be able to play baseball or soccer. I run into my high school friends from 15yrs ago and none of them do the sports they did in high school. While I still do martial arts.

I am 31yrs old and I don't even know where I could play soccer on a regular basis if I wanted to.

Depends on the sport and the martial art. I don't think Martial Arts in general gives a better workout than high school football or the track team but it sure is better than Golf or Baseball.

Yes for most it does since most martial arts teach you how to use both upper and lower body as well as give you a better understanding of balance, how to move and the applications of speed, power and leverage. All this along with the mental aspects that martial arts give make for better results in an athlete.

soccer players are probably the fittest athletes in the world. Martial Arts doesn't get your heart pumping like soccer does. However it does exercise muscles other sports don't.

i think an important aspect in most martial arts is calm, poise, grace and fluidity of movement. which when focused on can produce a more zen-like state of mind that calms the body and mind. I don't think any other sport is quite like that.

It depends on individual training i believe... I was in basketball during school... and it was worse then my army training.

But during the period just before any martial art tournaments, i train harder, like swimming 60 laps and doing kicking routines...
