You could, but it's not as gentle on a cat's skin. Since you don't have cat shampoo right now, you could use dish soap (like Dawn or a similar generic brand) as a substitute - or even baby shampp. It won't dry out the kitty's skin and will get him nice and clean - and it smells better than cat shampoo anyway :)

Human shampoo will probably be too harsh, because a cat's skin is more delicate than a human's. Check at the vet or a pet supply store about a shampoo that's good for cats.

I would not use it myself...it can be very harsh on a cats skin...
You can get pet shampoo at the dollar store....or you could use baby shampoo...
Which ever one you choose I would say that you should mix pet/baby shampoo...with water....half water/half shampoo...
when you wash the cat hold him down firmly
(but gently) by the neck...and talk softly to him...
use lukewarm water and use a cup to pour it over him...after he is wet use your shampoo mix on him and lather him up ...be careful to avoid his eyes....then rinse...and make sure you get ALL the shampoo off him as it can irrtate his skin and cause him to lose hair...
then gently towel dry him...and put him somewhere warm with a dry towel...him will want to be alone..lol
hope that helps!

I have a tabby too she is 13 and on my cats i use regular shampoo thats for people usually its just leftover. Nothing bad has ever happened to either of them. :] I think your cat should be just fine, clean, and smelling good.

When we give our kitten a bath, we use baby shampoo and it hasn't seemed to harm the kitten at all, but I would stick to baby shampoo, not something intentioned for use with teens/adults. Also, make sure it is a shampoo that is "Tear Free"

Animals like cats and dogs actually have a different chemical balance than humans do. Our shampoos add oils and such to our hair that we need, but it strips animals of their natural chemicals that they need. That's why they have specific shampoos for animals.

It could make him sick because he has a different pH balance, and also, human shampoo isn't meant for cats.

No, it is not ok for a cat to use human shampoo that could badly hurt them or get them sick. If u continue using human shampoo it might die.
