Simple. Others do not accept that God would place another person in authority or leadership over them. They also think that they have been given the intelligence and wisdom to know and understand God's will on their own.

Based on what I've been told by Catholic friends, many do not agree with all the teachings of the church. They do agree that the Pope is the head of the church and the leader, but they have their own opinions and they do not see this as a conflict. A good Catholic friend tells me this regarding the church's teaching that contraception is wrong: "The Pope is not going to feed and clothe my kids when I have them."

Explain what you mean by confusion?
Catholics are the least confused, we have the Bible, Holy Tradition as well as a book that has our beliefs printed in it for all to read (Catechism of the Catholic Church)
We all do not always follow it, and for those times we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
I think the Confusion about the Catholic Church comes mainly from outside the Catholic Church from people that have not taken the time to learn what our true teachings are.
We are not subject to be led by and individual preacher who may be interpreting Scripture to suit his own agenda.
Peace be with you!

The single largest organization outside some nations (to which many belong by birth and not volunteer) is the Catholic Church which operates efficiently as it has done for 2000 years, and survived and has grown. Now you could argue about it being slow to change, but these heirarchies are typified in the natural and supernatural realms . .. therefore it is not so unusual to think GOD would build HIS Church so . . . further, the only place i see confusion among CHRISTians are in the Churches which do not adhere to Papal, Bishop, Priestly authority on matters which are of faith and morals. ..
To invert this arguement and say the Church is confused is all wrong. There's a strict necessity of keeping the fundements of the law, which are given not of flesh and blood but are of GOD OUR FATHER. Through JESUS our HIGH PRIEST and through the Vicar of CHRIST on Earth . .. our HIGH PRIEST is JESUS CHRIST the HEAD OF THE BODY . .. therefore we say the CHURCH is inerrant . .. and is the TRUE CHURCH . ..
Some won't like that so will prefer to turn it all upside down in order to say (in error) you are right we are wrong. But we say that all people can be saved, but even so only through JESUS OUR LORD, to whom JESUS has given us the CHURCH to be a light unto the nations leading to CHRIST and salvation . .. come to the LIGHT and be saved . .. the light of CHRIST in the world is the Roman Catholic Church which is the high priest unto the nations . .. the fullness of the TRUTH.
LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

it's not the staunch cathoilics that're confused - they're very confident in their views and of being right and there's not much room for arguement about what they think .
what gets troublesome is when people start attributing this subset of christianity's opinions onto other subsets of christianity.
since the bible is written by many people and is a translation there a lot of scope for different interpretations which is why we have opinions so diverse that they actually make distinct form of christianity from the same book,
so people start getting confused about if they can go to heaven if they're good and repent or if they have to be baptised to do so, or if they have to take the blood of christ to remain pure to do so!
what a waste of Good people all this religious confusion is!

I thought the confusion was in the thousands of conflicting protestant denominations who each profess to follow only the Bible ?
