karma is another name for a universal concept, for example the Christian, "do unto others, as you would have done unto you", the Wiccan Rede states, "And ye harm none, do what you will". It basically sums up the idea that if we give happiness, we will receive happiness in return, and if we give grief we will receive it, kind of a balance out the universe kinda thing...lol

The Buddhist definition simplifies it to "cause and effect" for quick discussion, but the underlying definition is that every thought you have and every subsequent actions have an effect on everything and everybody (like seeds planted), and so if you do altruistic, virtuous deeds you will reap a result that is similar but greater in result. The opposite goes with non-virtuous deeds that cause harm and suffering... you plant the seeds of harm and suffering for others and ultimately you reap the consequence of such suffering.

It is not retribution, it is not repayment. It is honing the wheel of evolvement, so to speak. If you do something to harm someone, it is because you do not understand. So: by the laws of the physical universe, it is attracted to you so that you may know all of the experience in You. How else would you learn? It is not punishment, it is a loving process in which we learn the hard way.
