I eat shrimp, like there's no tomorrow!!!!
I ain't even exaggerating, 1 bit!
As w/ all seafood (& chicken) its easy to get sick,
if the foods aren't kept @ the proper temp., or
handled correctly.
So, it is possible.

My hsbnd got 'seriously ill'; once, from fried clams.
he was driving on the freeway when it HIT him,
1 of our girls was w/ him.
She told how he was crawling out of the car,
by the time they made it home.

My hsbnd., & I went on a dinner cruise,
1 of the 'all u can eat' items was shrimp.
When the server went by w/ the shrimps,
I would take 6-8 cups @ a time!
I was peelin' & eatin'!!!!
I had a decent pile of 'em ready to pop in my mouth.
My hsbnd said "how can u peel em & not eat em
right away"? I told him I force myself to wait,
then I can eat a bunch of then in a row, then I keep peeling.
When I was finished; I had 18 cups of shrimp in me!

Huge is the operative word in the question. Iodine is more common in farmed shrimp than wild shrimp. Shrimp is generally flushed when harvested. If you have an iodine allergy steer clear. Otherwise I suspect you would have to almost eat your own body weight in shrimp to get iodine poisoning. By which stage you would have other issues.

If you clean them and cook them the right way in a lot of water, It should wash out any stuff that is in it. As for Iodine poisoning you can get that from eating talbe salt.

while sea food does contain iodine, unless you were allergic to it,(which a lot of people are) I can't see anyway of building it to a toxic level. You couldn't eat enough. I'd guess they were allergic to it.
