I believe the American Administration, in an attempt to keep support for the war in Iraq, are spinning that by fighting terrorists in Iraq they are keeping America safe. Americans, do you believe this?

John T - 21 years before the 2nd world war, 9 million died in the trenches of the first world war - Neville Chamberlain attempted to appease Hitler simply because he was loathed to see another generation (the sons of the fathers etc) die in yet another war -

It's going to be really tough picking a best answer here. There are various opinions and most perfectly valid and as I'm from the UK how am I to judge what possible mind games your Administration is playing ..... might have to put this one to the vote..

i love the right wing spinmeisters who come out here and say no one is spinning anything.
bush has caught on to the idea that americans are tired of fighting a fight that has nothing to do with 9/11.
so, being the bright guy he is, he just 'says' the fight in iraq is all about 9/11.
it's shameless and i think vastly underestimates the intelligence of average americans (all of whom are smarter than bush, i'm starting to think).
every day we fight in iraq, the real guys who attacked america on 9/11 (saudis mostly) are free to plan, finance and carefully organize their next attack.
also, the iraqi parliament is TAKING THE MONTH OF AUGUST OFF.
i say, if they do, so should our soldiers...

We are staying in Iraq for several reasons:
We don't want the country to deterioate into a bloody civil war where thousands might be killed.
We don't want the blame associated with that.
We don't want it to look like we lost.
We don't necessarily want the Shia's, who outnumber the Sunni's, to have total control over the country. This would give Iran too much influence in the region.
However unlikely, we really would like to see Democracy in Iraq.
The Al Queda part is mostly spin. The relatively small Al Queda in Iraq would likely be eliminated after a civil war by either Sunnis on Shias. - Too dangerous for them also.
Exactly how many Al Queda are equipped to pack up themselves and their weapons and get 5995 miles from Baghdad to New York?

No, I truly don't believe that ideology at all
Apparently they never learn from the history that a peace that being created with violence, blood, sacrifice, and war never can be keep forever and always came with another war to dispute that "peace"
Ok, if they think that by keeping fighting going on Iraq, they may think that kind of thought can keep the American safe, Ok yes BUT ONLY FOR A MOMENT, temporarily !
Actually...
USA need Iraq for their abundant oil supply, its not for the terrorist base or AQ but in the end, we shall see that USA want to pump their oil from Iraq land !
Why ? so simple...
If not for the sake of Iraq oil, all of this called "terrorist" by USA had been bombed to pulp by USA forces from the beginning, like they do in Vietnam or Korean war
There will be another terrorist that will come to surface to terrorize the American land & people again cuz they THOUGHT that their life, their land, their family are being ruined by American force in Iraq war while USA thought that by being in there, they can bring peace & safe to Iraq land !
Maybe their misfortune are not had been caused directly by the war, maybe they even the casualities of that war, but who will cares about that ???
Sorry that this a fact that we can't denied !
Lets hope the God will forgive us for our beloved country sins

I dont think the Administration is Spinning anything. What I do believe is that the war in Iraq is being fought in the wrong way. We are coddling these people. The Islamic Extremists are a true threat to the US, For no reason other than we are American and Not Islamic. We need to get rid of all of them, as sad as that is to say. As soon as we pull out, Israel will be bombarded, for no reason other than being Jew.
Its a sticky situation, but the bottom line is that there is no Patriotism in this country anymore. Everyone is in a big hurry to disagree. This Country is going Downhill fast! and it is Scary!

To answer your question yes there is an enormous spin machine here, normally propagated by Fox news. Starting off, one of the Bush administrations main claims is that "Al Qaeda in Iraq" is ungodly dangerous and are the big problem. In reality Al Qaeda in Iraq accounts for about 1 percent of the fighters on the ground, and while their acts are atrocious they lack the sophistication it would take to have another attack in America. So I blatantly reject that Al Qaeda in Iraq is a danger to America.
Their second claim is that their are a large number of foreign fighters coming into Iraq and most of the fighting isn't being done by Iraqi's themselves. This is a COMPLETE falsity, foreign fighters account for MAYBE 1 half of 1 percent of all the fighters in Iraq.
Overall, the majority of combat fighting done in Iraq is Iraqi on Iraqi (typically sunni on shiia and vice versa) which therefore brings us to the inevitable conclusion Bush doesn't want: Iraq is in the midst of a civil war.
There is no danger to America. The only danger is that our citizens are over there dying while our politicians are over here trying to keep them in a position to keep on dying.

I say that we should let the American public have it their way and let another 9-11 happen and then when 2800 more Americans die and we see on the TV mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers jumping from 108 story windows to end up as stains on the side walks below we let them reconsider if they are smart enough to be making the decisions.

Dr Watson: Al-Qaeda is in Iraq and has been there for years.
The real question is why are 'certain politicians' using American (and British) sympathy for my fallen brothers, to gain votes, while implying that Al-Qaeda is not there?
Why are Americans (and Brits) not listening to their Soldiers and Marines on the ground when we tell them AQ is there?
When did British citizens decide that capitulation and appeasement was the best way? I thought they learned from Neville Chamberlain.
Know your enemy. I've used their own words to explain their goals, strategies and plans. I've used independent research to quanitify the results and threats. I've used personal experience to highlight the realities.
For the groundtruth, see my blog:
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-DfkctJU7dK5B7LcNROoyVQ--;_ylt=AiNXZokI1G6zowgYXNnJS9m0AOJ3?cq=1
No politics, just the groundtruth, from a combat veteran that has been there.
Yes, they are there now. Yes, they were and are in Pakistan. Yes, they are and were in Britain. Yes, they were and are in the US. They are worldwide, but they are concentrated in Iraq. They are there because that is the place they believe they can set up their "Caliphate" (see my article on it).
Because it is important to them, they will continue to go there and fight there rather than have as many in London and NYC. It doesn't mean none will attack us at home, but it means fewer will and it means that our Law Enforcement can catch a greater percentage of the ones that do.
Dr. Watson: I do not doubt your assesment of his motivations, but I point to the results. It directly and immediately impacted the lives of several million Czechs, who at the time had the 2nd largest Army in Europe and would have provided the best first defense against Hitler, had the 3 powers not given away their defenses to him.
It later impacted the lives of Poles and the French. And resulted in the slaughter of millions of civilians as well as a second world war which killed millions of troops on both sides.
While I prefer sitting at the negotiations table with *reasonable* people with differing opinions, there are evil people in this world, who cannot be reasoned with and will not attempt an equitable solution. They use unsupportable excuses to kill. Just as did Hitler, they make demands that cannot be met. Just as Ho Chi Minh, they use our own media and freedoms to undermine support for our mission and troops. Their Koran tells them it's ok to lie to us and that they must convert us, by the sword if necessary.
I can support all of this with their own words and their Koran. I can support it with personal experience, just as one would be able to support Churchills statements with the book "Mein Kampf."
Dr. Watson: You're welcome. I have decided to believe you are being genuine and have read the information on my blog rather than being sarcastic at my reminders of our common history, of which I am and was, certain you knew, though many of our (not all) American readers are less educated on.
