I would advise her to ask her ob/gyn rather than really on the advice of a bunch of random strangers. Without any information about what she is currently using, why she needs to change, or any existing medical problems any advice would be a shot in the dark anyway,

she'll be more likely to be offered the coil rather than the pill especially if she's a smoker as the risk of thrombosis is higher as you get older. there's also the mini or progesterone only pill. the injection is an option (depo provera) but it has the same risks as the pill. everything else is a bit messy!

She should go to a family planning clinic and they can talk her through all the options available to her.Can tell her all the pros and cons and give her leaflets etc. Then you can both discuss it (you could even go with her) decide and get whatever you decide.Good luck. Its nice to know she is being responsible

Merina inplant that works for five years or Depo shot works for three months at a time. I would go for the Depo first, used it and loved it.

She should call a few different doctors and get some advice or go to web.MD and get more info.
