my mom and sister go to a free lunch thing at a church every week and every time, they keep trying to get me to go with them. It's not that i don't want free food, it's just that if i ate a free meal, i would feel really guilty about taking that food from people that really need it. I'm not really a religious guy either and it's not about it being in a church or anything like that, it's just that i'm tired of making excuses and i just don't know how to tell my mom without making her feel bad about what she is doing.

You have an interesting perspective on this.

There truly is "no free lunch" and what they are proving is that they are a church that serves themselves instead of others. I'd ask them why they are not feeding the hungry who cannot afford a lunch instead of feeding themselves a free lunch they can afford.

Well, does she feel you all need it? Is she going to be with people who might need more than just a free meal? Have you ever gone with her and just observed her behavior open minded?
You should discuss it with her, ask her why she goes and if she really is just going for the free meal or if she is trying to be supportive of the church and its programs. Tell her you don't want to take a meal from someone else who might need it, and you could even go and just not eat, help even if you think it a better approach. You don't have to be religious to support or help with a decent act.
I don't think not going is a bad thing either, just giving you some options and another point of view.

I think you answered your own question , quite well- if your family is indeed poor, and a free meal once a week is necessary then by all means take advantage of it- the church is doing a good thing- however if you really do not need it , unlike others, then no you should not go. You need to tell your mom , the reason you feel uncomfortable. What is the reason your mom uses that she goes every week?

Sounds like you are spreading it a little thick. My guess is it has nothing to do with "feeling... guilty about taking the food...". Churches do plenty for their communities typically, serving food at a weekly meeting is no different than a group of bridge players serving food at their weekly game. What is the real reason you don't want to go?

just b/c that is how you feel .. doesn't mean that is how she feels.. or that she should feel insulted.. or whatever she might feel ..

just explain it to her.. she must know that her own son means well

... i would eat it anywayz.. i'm not religious.. nor do i have a religion.. but i do work at a church.. and i eat their free meals .. it is open to anyone who attends the church and employees .. in which all are doing well and are not stuggeling for food..

if something like that is givin 2 you .. take it.. its not being selfish .. especially since they prob have too much food anyway .. and it will prob end up being thrown away

It sounds to me you have a good heart.
I think the best way to handle this is head on , tell you mother and tell her why.
Even if it makes her mad when she calms down she will probably think about it and understand.
By the way I used to be scared of telling people things in case it upset them but i have found if your straight up and explain your feeling most people understand
